And so it begins... What you ask? The creation of my new white garden! I am beyond excited. Up to last weekend I mainly have been trimming back trees, weeding, preparing the future garden beds by putting down a thick layer of mulch, and edging the beds with natural lime stones that can be found on our property. And even though I only have been able to get a small part of the frontyard ready for planting, when we had to go to Home Depot to buy something essential that we needed for the house, I couldn’t resist the temptation and popped into the nursery and got the first plants for the white garden. Yes, this white delphinium was relatively expensive and it probably won’t last too long in the Texas summer heat but I couldn’t pass up this beautiful unnamed variety and see it as a gift to myself for all the hard work that I have put into the garden so far. I have always adored these amazingly pretty and elegant plants and I am so happy to have one blooming in my own garden now! On another note, this is already my 500th post on Instagram! I hardly can believe it! Peckerwood Garden - Hempstead, TX

I went to Texas, and thus made the pilgrimage to Peckerwood. The drive from Austin did me good - along highways strewn with bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush. Through the “lost pines” of Bastrop, where stands of loblolly pines pop up in the middle of post oak country, isolated from the main body of East Texas pines by 100 miles. Past ranches and contented cows. Almost to Houston, but thankfully not quite. Peckerwood is a destination for plant lovers and open to the public on select days through the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program. I went last Saturday, and an incredible tour guide graciously led our small, random group of plant lovers around the garden for well over our allotted time.

The collection has over 3,000 plants from Mexico, Asia, and the US. And of those plants, some began from seed or cutting from one of the 100 or so collection trips founder John Fairey made to Mexico. We saw more oak species than I’d seen in my entire life. There were oaks with smooth, mottled bark that more resembled magnolias or musclewood. Oaks with smooth, waxy leaves and rough, leathery leaves like ficus, and soft, woolly leaves like lamb’s ear. 

We looked at specimen hackberries like the weeping one pictured, pines that repel mistletoe (Pinus pseudostrobus), maples that seem to fare better in Texas than Philadelphia (Acer oliverianum). There were the most floriferous fringetrees (Chionanthus retusus) I’d ever seen with beautiful forms. And from the depths of shade, cycads and saw palmettos seemed like they were coming to swallow you whole.

Weaving our way carefully through a spiky (and shade-free) forest of Nolina, Agave, and Dasylirion, we reached the Mazari Palm (Nannorrhps ritchieana) that was readying its bloom and already well over our heads. New young arrivals lingered under shade cloths (for a few years we learned) before joining their sun-loving elders.
