Okay. So I want to preface that this post is not unique to me and there are other posts like this already going around tumblr dot com.
I am going to list the “non-vegan” things that I personally do below, since there is this weird mysticism around veganism about perfectionism or strict adherence to some sort of “set of rules” that just truly does NOT exist.
I want to invite other vegans to add on or make their own posts! The hope here is that non-vegans will see that veganism isn’t some weird exclusive club and that we are all just people doing our best.
I’m also going to note that as someone who has been vegan for about 15 years now (and vegetarian for 23), I am very secure in the following and these can’t really be used as a “gotcha” on me. I’m almost 40 and could give less of a shit what someone else thinks about any of this LOL. (Within reason, of course.)
(The following list is being kept as strictly to veganism as I can make it, though a lot overlaps due to how all different issues are intertwined. Like I’m not going to bring up things - where I can avoid it - such as getting take-out occasionally.)
* I take medicine! Woah, who woulda thought? Specifically, I have been on SSRIs for over 20 years. I need escitalopram daily
* I also take medicine when I need to. Be it over the counter (like flu meds or ibuprofen) or prescribed by a doctor, I take medicine!
* My husband and I still have and use some leather goods. This is mainly in the form of jackets or belts. I don’t personally have any (I never liked leather since I was a child) but my husband still has usable items that will be used till it dies.
* Down pillows! We have some pillows unfortunately filled with down that we obtained over many years, mainly from a couch we bought yeeeears ago (they came with the couch for free) or some past roommates leaving stuff behind. We are keeping and using these pillows till they die.
* Some household products (like cleaning products) are not vegan. While most of what we have aren’t animal tested (and many plant based), there are a few that aren’t simply because such items aren’t available to us.
* My dog! Elvira is fed a poultry based kibble (Open Farm’s turkey and chicken), gets treats of all sorts (usually poultry based), takes medicine, and the like. I don’t have the funds or time right now to test out veg kibble and do the accompanying tests with our vet to make sure she is getting all her nutrition needs met.
* We live in a SOCIETY! We do our best not to purchase too many items (I personally have six pairs of shoes period), plastic is just a sad reality of our lives. (Such as produce bags in a grocery store, even though we have a bunch of reusable bags.)
It’s almost like…vegans are human! And doing the best with what we have! And even if I wasn’t able to adhere to a strictly plant-based diet, the point is that ***I am doing the best within my means to avoid animal usage where it is practical and possible for me***!
