It's awkward. It's inefficient. It's slightly unoptimized. It's weird.
It's Tumblr.
There's something charming about it all.

you: Computer, generate a Tumblr user.
AI: processing...
[AI] slowflowering: This is my OC, Lil' Napo.
[AI] slowflowering: He's Napoleon, but shorter.
you: Thanks. Increase the gender quotient.
[AI] slowflowering: Lil' Napo is non-binary. He's feeling masculine with his pastel uniform today. I've been working for a week on this piece featuring him with his boyfriend.
you: Great, but I want you to increase the fandom level.
[AI] slowflowering: ...the Onceler.
you: * feeling nostalgic in the year 2063, long after Tumblr has disappeared from the face of the 'net *

what was really fun was scrolling through the notes on that announcement post and seeing- instead of the usual “half people complaining that this was a godawful idea and begging them not to do it, half people saying that it wasn’t really that bad and we’d eventually get used to it and to give tumblr the benefit of the doubt”, it was 100%, without exception, people complaining that it was a godawful idea and begging them not to do it
apparently this is just for the mobile app, though? not sure why, and am living in terror of those motherfuckers taking it to web
I appreciate that Tumblr staff just posted this notice at the top of the feed.
Nice and direct. All the users will see it.
tumblr56k.org was a successor to the early 21st-century website tumblr.com, focused on limiting operating expenses through limiting bandwidth usage and storage costs
users were limited to text and small images no larger than 640x480 pixels
free user accounts were required to be attached to a paid user account. thanks to low hosting costs, each paid user account could support up to 20 free users for a low monthly fee of $3 US
though the site became popular during the chip shortage, high moderation costs became a problem with the influx of new users, and management struggled to handle the growth of the moderation team, ultimately leading to the site's decline
the tumblr56k.org website remains online today as a read-only archive, accessible at a leisurely 56kbps
I will miss Tumblr dearly when it is gone.
Huh, glitched post, yet still visible, and totally unclear why it happened.
One more monday exception: Bots are now doing fake Tumblr age verification.
