Call me vain, but I used to LOVE staring at myself in the mirror...NAKED! Not so much anymore....eeeek!!
Is it just me, or does it get harder to work out, the older you get?? There was a time, not long ago, when getting up at 5am to not only work out, but train OTHERS to work out, was my daily LIFESTYLE!!
In my spare time, I would hike or run or play tennis with my Soror...anything I could do that was physically exhilarating, I DID it! (Yes, that too! :-p) So, I'm not exactly sure I can pinpoint WHEN it happened, and I definitely can't point out WHY, but somehow, I lost my mojo!!! Getting up early wasn't the problem, it was the WORKING OUT that I couldn't seem to follow through on!!
For the last year or so, I have been a "fair-weather friend" to my body!! Half-ass work outs if at all, and I have cheated on my eating regiment more times than I can count!! The worst part is, I've become one of those people I used to YELL at in my boot camps about being "too busy" to EAT or go for a walk!!! WTF is THAT?!?! My schedule is hectic, yes, but that should NEVER be an excuse not to take care of yourself!! You only get ONE body!!!
So with all this physical tug-of-war I'd been playing with myself, I felt led to ask my other 30-ish friends if they were struggling with the same issues. The answer was almost always a resounding "YES!" So then, of course, the analysis began!! LOL..
How do people who have been active and pretty health-conscious most of their lives, just ALL OF A SUDDEN, start eating crap, missing meals and NOT WORKING OUT!!?? It's mind-boggling! We aren't new to the lifestyle, but it's as if something just clicked off.
Then I realized.....it must be the big 3-0!!
We're getting older. Our metabolisms are naturally beginning to slow down and so are we! Our schedules are less care-free and flexible, so dropping everything at a moment's notice to go hit the Santa Monica Stairs with your girlfriend, just isn't as much of an option. With age comes wisdom, which is great.....but it also comes with a full schedule, responsibilities, expectations and more bottles of wine with girlfriends than I care to mention! The late nights & drinks are much harder to recover from, and sometimes we lose the entire next day!
So, are we old? Are we lazy? I think it's a combination of both. No we're not the Golden Girls yet, and we're not so far gone from motivation that we need to sign up for The Biggest Loser....yet! BUT we are getting older and busier and our bodies ARE changing, as are our mentalities and values. I think it's going to take a MAJOR conscious change in thought pattern, and a LOT of supportive friends who are willing to help us stay committed. It's ALWAYS easier with a partner :-)
It's an interesting and awkward transition, this 30 thing. There may even be more self-discovery involved than there was with puberty!
The one thing I'm sure of is this: I don't mind BEING 30...but I DAMN sure don't want to start LOOKING it!!! Not until I'm at LEAST 39!! :-p With that said, let me boil these eggs and head to the gym!
Just writing this post has made me realize what a lazy, old slob I've been! LOL!! Well, writing this AND starting this pic of myself....talk about motivation!! It was all good just a year ago!!
