The deadlands look a bit.. different from rivenspire.

You know what series needs attention?

The Deadlands by Skye Melki-Wegner. Like, it’s a xenofiction that sort of resembles a cross between Wings of Fire and Jurassic Park, and it’s fucking amazing.

It’s about five young dinosaurs caught in a war fifty years after the meteor hit; a meteor which made them intelligent. The characters are written beautifully, and it captures their emotions so well. Hell, it does a better job at writing trauma than Warriors! Genuinely, it makes me anxious for the characters, and they kind of fucked me up with some of the really dark scenes.

what I’m trying to say is, people should read it! It’s only three books long, and it’s incredible. It’s unique, it’s dark, it’s raw, and it deserves some more attention, goddammit!

The Deadlands Guidelines - PSYCHOPOMP.COM

Fiction

I share because it is where I'll be submitting my latest horror short and also because their guidelines are some of the least insane.

They like quiet, isolated horror, judging by the stuff they print (issues are free to read online and worth reading), as well as the dark and dreadful. There's a little 'no vampires, demons, zombies, etc' thing in there that confuses me a tad but I get it. One can certainly write a story about any of those monsters and make it quiet and spooky but it's not commonly done.

Still I share in case my fellow horror authors are looking for open submission calls, because this one is open all month.

No theme either, I don't think they do those.

I wanted to put this out for artists too but I think $100 for a cover is low-balling and I don't think that's worth it. Especially considering how very rendered they seem to expect it and how confusingly vague what they ask for.

They pay authors $.10/word, which is well above standard, but the artists make well below and I am confused.

And yet I share, for the authors out there. >.>
