Ive got my nitpicks with the amazon prime WoT show, but this season has definitely shown things are going in a good direction. They need to stop teasing me and show the Finn and give Mat his Ashandarei already, whether they are going to hang his ass for it or not, but otherwise most of my favorite aspects of the books have been handled really well. (Min is feeling like a bit of a fumble to me too, tbh) The Aes Sedai, the Aiel, Warder bonds, Tel'aran'rhiod, and so many other bits have been handled amazingly. Shohreh Aghdashloo was an amazing choice for Elaida, though I have a heavy bias from how much I loved her portrail of Chrisjen Avasarala in The Expanse adaptation. The White Cloaks too. Someone please give Abdul Salis an Emmy, cuz he will be Eamon Valda in my head forever more. Call my standards low (more than one person has), but I dont think enough people remember or had to experience 90s/2000s Sci-Fi Channel adaptations and the ever looming bogeyman of Red Eagle Productions. Changes were always going to happen when adapting a series with over a dozen books, and I think the team responsible for the current series has done a phenomenal job by any standard and far better than I expected when I heard Bezos got his grubby mitts on it.

Really hoping the show includes the Finn in some regard. They’re a lynchpin to the plot, and without them they’ll end up rewriting a significant amount of story.

Specific complaints and book spoilers below the cut

This is my biggest complaint about the pacing of the show. I understand that budgets exist, but this is why likely any tv adaptation of the series will never be satisfying. The story is too big for 8 episode seasons.

The speed doesn’t allow for background side characters so we don’t get to see the Web of Destiny, which is the number one coolest thing about the books.

The ta’veren started tugging the patten toward them since long before their births. Lan’s existence as a king of a fallen kingdom and eventual connection to Moiraine is tied to Perrin’s arch nemesis and Rand’s mother.

Farmers in book 1 with two lines participate in scenes 5 books later and have an impact on the plot.

Rand’s ta'maral'ailen becomes so strong by the later books that it is specifically Egwene’s inoculation to it after living near him for years that solidifies her power as the only aes sedai that stood a chance at diplomacy with the Dragon.

The doorways and Mat’s journey with the Finn, “giving half the world to save the world,” are deeply connected to the resolutions of the plots for Moiraine, Lanfear, Thom, and Rand, and his medallion, extremely unique in nature (hate that child Valda might be the one who has it in the show), is what allows him to survive and protect, it strengthens Elayne’s power as a fabricator and saves her life multiple times.

Mat’s ashandarei is what helps open the door (haha) to the Seanchan and brings about a temporary truce.

The fucking fireworks?? Making it Lanfear just using the power in Caemlyn rather than the Illuminator’s chapter house blowing up (also cause Lanfear) disconnects how Rands actions in Caemlyn coupled with Mat’s luck lead to Mat’s access to fireworks. Mat uses those fireworks to blow up a wall, and learns through experience the destructive power of black powder. This is eventually one of the strongest weapons in the series, and it’s connected to Rand and Loyale running from trollocs in book 2, and a character we should have met in season 2. Alludra is a small character, but her thread is an important one in the pattern.

The entire book series is a well laid yet very complicated set up of dominoes. The show is walking through the maze of dominoes to get to the final block, all the while destroying the overall picture the dominoes would have shown had they not been barreled through.

Mat’s plot, I think more than anyone else’s, will be ruined because of this. Also I’m just upset that, because there is no Fat Lanfear (we were robbed) with her caravan through the Waste, Mat doesn’t have his signature hat.

I’m not saying I’m not enjoying the show, I kind of am, but so much of it rings hollow. It has no soul. They spend so much time talking about the lore, much of it oversimplified, that they don’t have time to show flashes of side characters and how they are set off in a spin anytime they come into contact with the main cast.

I’m hoping they are focusing so heavily on Moiraine because they are indeed still planning to put her on ice for a good chunk of what comes next. If they can still rope the Finn in, the show can still maybe come back from all the important bits they’ve skipped, but a lot of what leads to that plot has already been messed up. Mat hangs, sure, but we’ve already lost the chance of him hanging from Avendesora… but there’s gotta be at least one red door, or the plot is going to completely collapse.
