Obi-wan Kenobi is the guy you want.

You want the guy who is willing to talk. You want the guy who is willing to go into a winning or losing situation willing to stop everything and negotiate.

Maybe it has to end in a fight.

Maybe it doesn’t.

You want the guy who can do both.

You want the guy who has been in a whole Rolodex of bad situations, because that guy is your best bet of getting out.

You want the guy who definitely knows how to end a fight. You want the guy who trained in one of the most aggressive and overwhelming fighting styles for over a decade of his life, and then ultimate form of defense, and then mashed them together into the Ego-Buster 3000.

Throughout the whole series of Star Wars books, Obi-wan is the guy who ends up on insane missions, literally, and resolves to move forward even though he’s usually doubtful of his own ability to do what needed to be done. In spite of a lack of confidence, he always moves forward. Every time.

You want the guy who just wants to see everyone go home happy. Because even though that’s not how life works (and he knows that), you still want the guy who wants the best possible outcome.

You want the guy who has set his ego very firmly to the side. And Obi-wan has had his ego shunted to the side at least one time per book, usually more. And when ego gets out of the way, the path forward opens up.

Obi-wan Kenobi is never the strongest, yet he measures up. Obi-wan is never the most talented, yet he works harder than most ever will. Obi-wan fails often, yet he never fails to learn. He is not the smartest man in the galaxy, yet he has learned and applied many lessons, and therein grows wisdom. And Obi-wan is indeed very wise.

He’s a guy who learned Qui-gon’s lessons of openness to the force, mindfulness of the will of the force, the ways of conscience and willingness to give of himself for the betterment of others. Old lessons are always coming to his mind, every time he chooses to continue applying them to his life, always learning, willing to be taught. In the way that Jedi are lifelong students of the ways of the force, Obi-wan lives to learn.

That is the thing about Obi-wan Kenobi.

There is no-one better.

This is why he didn’t like Obi-wan’s lightsaber on a rope idea, and Anakin’s one blade does the job mindset, he is probably the most spoken about how you can do everything with a lightsaber

And a comment about Qui-gon actually intimidating people, which i thought interesting because he really doesn’t feel like he see’s himself as such and acts like it and then wonders why everyone around him isn’t nearly as easy going, there was also a comment about him agreeing to not being overprotective and Anakin complaining about Obi-wan being a rule follower

"The Jedi Path" book has some very interesting info on 'Marks of Contact' - basically the ways in which lightsaber combat is ended. Notable ones which we see in the films include:

Shiak, the second fundamental mark, pierces an opponent with the blade's point. Preferred for its precision, it is a Mark that indicates you are in control of the blade and the Force is in control of you

A pretty noble way for Maul to kill Qui-gon, all things considered.

Cho mai severs the weapon hand entirely, leaving your opponent alive but unable to continue the fight, and is thus a merciful conclusion to battle.

This is how both Anakin and Luke lose their hands, which does make sense in context - Dooku is a civilised duelist who also doesn't consider Anakin much of a threat, and Vader has just told Luke some very important information and is probably wanting him alive so he can turn. Also this book has annotations from varying owners, and this part is annotated by Luke with "I don't know that I'd call it merciful"

Sai cha is the act of cutting an enemy's head from his shoulders. It is never the intention of a Jedi to extinguish a fellow life, [...]. But when required, a lightsaber can also kill. If a shiak thrust through the heart cannot be done, this is the preferred method for a fatality.

So Anakin's killing of Dooku is relatively noble in its method, at least.

And now, we come to Obi-wan "forbidden methods of killing people" Kenobi!

Mou kei is a forbidden variant [of limb severing Marks], literally meaning "to dismember". It involves the act of cutting through several limbs at once. You should never need to use mou kei against a living being given the many alternatives.

Sai tok slices an entire body into two halves. The act is rightly considered barbaric and evidence of the furious emotions of the dark side. Unless you're fighting droids, no student of mine should ever use sai tok.

So yeah, Anakin 'war crimes' Skywalker learned it from somewhere. To be fair they make sense in context, since Obi-wan is left with very few options when fighting Anakin, and is very much angry and furious at Maul. However I have to assume the Council was not happy at Obi-wan for how he killed Maul lol

I really love Star Wars. For a million reasons. Including its many recurring themes & messages, one of them being:

It’s the message that Padmé offers in her dying words.

It’s the message Luke brings when he confronts Vader and the Emperor at the end of Episode 6.

It’s the message Rey offers to Kylo Ren in Episodes 8-9.

It’s the message of the Prodigal Son.

It’s the message of the Gospel.

Of course, in our polarized society today, it feels so much easier to just write off our enemies. ‘They’re too far gone.’ ‘They’re hopeless.’ ‘They’re ______.’

Star Wars doesn’t ignore the existence of evil. In fact, it reveals how seductive it is, even to the good guys.

But Star Wars still points to the possibility of redemption, even for the vilest offender.

Jesus is that person who doesn’t give up on us & made it possible for us to come back to the light! Because of what He did, we get to be close to Him if we choose to accept & follow Him 🫶🏻 He really is the closest & best friend I’ll ever have & I’m so grateful for His patience with me when I mess up, get too focused on myself, my fears, etc.!

I think good stories like Star Wars & many others are really great tools that can help shift our focus/give our minds a break, especially when the world seems so incredibly dark.

They can remind us of the light of God’s presence & inspire us to do the good we can in the ‘real’ world. Also they’re just really cool, lol. It’s a blessing to experience/celebrate them & the incredible artists that make them happen🥲

Star Wars In-Universe Texts and Literature

(These are books that exist in canon that you can actually read, not in-universe tie-in books created after the fact.)

The Jedi Path/here is a Jedi temple training manual. The Book of Sith is Darth Sidious’s compiled philosophy book.

Sacred Jedi Texts:   Aionomica/link (with a focus on in-universe function, as I believe it has some original writing to fill in the blanks), and here (with a focus more on visual accuracy.) Jedifreac & theredhandcomic also made the Aionomica. Rammahgon (or here)  PercNerd's collection constructionpaperandtears made one. This person (I believe it is all the same person) worked on translating the texts from their fictional languages. One, two, three, four. (Someone else trying to determine the alphabet of one page→here.)  Pages/here collected and added to by lerougemain. Physical pages astromech_dj is writing their own.

The English alphabet does appear in several of these books, a decision which I understand but resent.
