Born on this day: undisputed pioneering maestro of the ominous twangy rockabilly instrumental that made 1950s juvenile delinquents reach for their switchblades and set the groundwork for punk and heavy metal, menacing guitarist – and perennial Lobotomy Room favourite - Link Wray (Fred Lincoln Wray Jr, 2 May 1929 – 5 November 2005). That quiff! Those sideburns! Those shades! That sneer! The Hillbilly Wolf’s greatest tracks still retain their sleazy urgency all these decades later. My favourites will always include 1958 classic “Rumble” (of course!), “Deuces Wild”, “Jack the Ripper”, “Ace of Spades”, “The Shadow Knows”, “Run Chicken Run” and "The Swag" (borrowed by John Waters for the opening credits of Pink Flamingos (1972)).
