OUGH. Having this case so soon after John's sacrifice, and we see how Dean thinks of himself after.
Not to mention the plants rotting.
We see this in the Pilot, with the Winchester tree nearest Sam's nursery fire. We see it adjacently, with Sam hunched near a cut-off stump in episode 2, after losing Jess.
We see it with Amara, after she killed Chuck. And Jack is a more direct parallel, rotting everything around him after Cas's sacrifice for Jack came due...
Jack knew about Cas's deal long before it came due, but his prayer to Cas directly parallels this state of feeling toxic, poisonous to Dean, who also lose his father and felt: "What's dead should stay dead," with regards to himself.
I like this, because there are two parts to the loss. One, you feel responsible. You're toxic, scorching the ground. Two, when someone dies, you don't just mourn the past, you mourn the loss of growth, even, as in cases with John, especially the loss of potential repair.
