‘The Better Half’ follows a twenty something lesbian couple as they re-spark the romance into their life, after a near Instagram incident makes them realise they have become “too” comfy with each other. An all too real slice of life comedy in which Amy and Lindsay each take it in turns to set up a date, as they try to rekindle the magic, including karaoke, camping and recreational drug use.
The whole series can be watched in around half an hour and features some laugh out loud moments. The characters are likeable, the acting is believable (which makes sense as the two actresses are also a couple) but the plot does seem somewhat sporadic, which can be a good thing, although here it unfortunately just feels poorly written. I would really like for there to be more of this to review because the 5 episodes currently available seem like an unpolished gem with potential to go somewhere great, but it’s not quite there yet. Since the first series was published there have been several more shorts, 10 to 15 second clips, so I’m hoping they are trying to keep people interested whilst they make more full episodes. These shorts keep to the same theme as the episodes and again whilst there is a glimmer of potential, they are just too short to really go anywhere. The episodes are available to view online, either $2 per episode if you want to buy them or $1 if you just want to rent them for 24 hours. I strongly suggest not watching the trailer before viewing the episodes, as it contains a lot of the funny moments and they tend to lose their edge the second time round, instead the shorts or “halfsies” can be viewed here. Overall the series was fun and light-hearted but lacked any sort of direction. Rating: 3/5
