No More Highway Rat

I’m an independent songwriter and folk ballad collector, with a YouTube channel that got <100 views on most videos.

For fun, back 2018, I used the melody that Phil Ochs set to The Highwayman poem by Alfred Noyes to sing Julia Donaldson’s Highway Rat as a song. Much to my surprise, it got nearly 39,000 views.

Parents would write in the comments that this song was what their child listened to every night before bed. As of this week around 600 kids were listening to these songs every day.

Yesterday, Scholastic, through the Web Capio company, issued a DMCA Takedown on one of my videos, resulting in a copyright strike for my YouTube account.

I know they are fully within their rights to do this, and I have now taken down all of the videos of me singing Julia Donaldson’s books to avoid the risk of having my whole channel shut down.

As a parent of an autistic child, I know how important a song like this can be to kids, so I am now painfully aware of the children who will not be able to listen to my songs tonight.
