It’s Not About The Burqa is an anthology of Essays by Mariam Khan on Muslim women and the intersection between religion, culture, race and faith in the world today. I came across It’s Not About The Burqa on Instagram at the beginning of the year and two things attracted me to the book; first the cover can we take a minute to appreciate how beautiful the book cover is and second is the title; I never really knew or thought about the Burqa and I spent the next few minutes researching the Burqa and reading everything I could find on the book, it left me with an urgent need to read the book. Amazon wouldn’t ship the book to Nigeria; but Roving Heights came to the rescue and it has turned out to be my best read of 2019 so far. Here are a few things the book taught me; 1. Culture has never allowed religion to flourish separate of it’s influence, it is become our individual responsibility to seek out the truth, find meaning and full understanding. 2. I acknowledge it is hard but learn to draw the line that represents where culture stops and religion starts 3. Family always means well but you/ I need to draw the line, on the extent we allow them control and dictate our actions. 4. Never make blanket statements about a group of people; assumptions hurt every party involved. Seek knowledge and always speak from a place of understanding 5. Even if you are afraid to tell your story; tell it scared because no one will tell it with more accuracy than you would. 6. We each have complex relationship with certain people and things in our lives, acknowledge the complexity and sometimes you need to embrace the fact that there may never be a resolve. I will close this out by with these few words; There are many things I will still learn but I am glad this book watered my appetite for this journey, I am grateful to all the women that shared their stories and allowed us a glimpse into their lives, I look forward to a time when other women will tell their own stories and leave footprints for our daughters to come to follow. Here is to telling our truths! #itsnotabouttheburqa #bookreview #theoverthinker https://www.instagram.com/p/BxwaB6OFJfZ/?igshid=dqkin20ib27n
