How the Pandemic Has Changed Our Lives
The pandemic has and continues to have an impact on the vulnerable in society and social media is still a talking point on everything pandemic. It has and continues to affect the majority of people. I talk about these things on my blog, because they also affect me, my mental health.
The upheaval from Covid to poverty, is the reason why pupil absence in school is rising. (Source: theguardian). It has changed us, society is changed, the world is changed. For many people their lives are now permanently changed.
Social isolation of the pandemic
When you add social isolation, disruption to work, family routines, lockdown fever and economic instability, it is understandable and easy to see why the WHO say mental health has hit critical levels.
For many people, the pandemic isn’t over. There is little thought and consideration for the vulnerable, for people who are still cautious, for what's happening to people in society, for those who continue to need help. Covid isn't over, however many times we convince ourselves it is.
Animals help with mental health
I’m not sure adopting a dog would have been on the cards for many families, including mine. In the pandemic mental health is affected. In lockdown, charities saw a rise in pets being adopted, only to be returned, once the country got moving again.
Lives have changed
Our lives have changed, behaviours have changed. Many have commented on how we have become more self-absorbed, less charitable towards others. Isolation has tested our sense of identity. It is time for governments, opposition parties and society to unite, to work together. Most of us, according to social media, still live with the concern of the pandemic in our lives.
Although restrictions are lifted, many vulnerable people aren't back in their lives. With no moral high ground, it's a world I don’t want to recognise, but also a world I need to fit into, and I don’t know how to do that.

The Pandemic has changed Society
In an earlier blog, entitled ‘The Pandemic Has Changed Us’ I wrote about the research that has been undertaken and which reaches the view that we have all changed. The pandemic could have made society more people-focused. Instead, we have become more self-focused.
Lifting restrictions has exposed the more vulnerable
Governments were responsible in bringing and keeping society together. Instead, in lifting restrictions politicians have cut off the more vulnerable groups in society and have exposed the more vulnerable. I am vulnerable. We can all change back and be more giving.
Survival: The Covid Years
In Survival: The Covid Years, I share my overwhelming physical and mental struggles within the chaos of the pandemic. In a revealing memoir, I show how I learned to cope with stress and anxiety and the on-going self-isolation through Covid, through the healing power of words, and with a steely determination to connect with the outside world.
We have all lived the drama, we have all struggled to comprehend Covid-19. Covid-19 was a difficult time for many of us. I wrote the book because I struggled. Now I offer explanations that can also help you also understand what you went through in the pandemic, so you can find an acceptance on your experiences, so that you can mentally and emotionally heal. What the book does
“By shedding light on her personal challenges through the pandemic, Ilana encourages the reader to explore the thoughts and feelings raised by their own pandemic journey. In this way she aims to unlock future potential for others, enabling them to move on from this enormously difficult time. A must read for anyone wanting to take positive steps after the challenges of Covid-19.”

The Pandemic Has Changed Us
New research published in science journal PLOS One, reported that American adults experienced changes in their personalities over the duration of COVID-19 pandemic. The changes were small but equivalent to around a decade’s worth of personality changes in only two years.
The Pandemic Research
The researchers analysed data from 7,109 adults, aged 18 to 109. The participants took personality tests that assessed the traits in the five-factor model of personality - managing stress, connecting with others, creative thinking, trusting others and being disciplined and responsible. The researchers examined test results from before the pandemic, early in the pandemic and later in the pandemic.
The Findings...
Younger adults have become moodier and more prone to stress, less co-operative and trusting, and less restrained and responsible. While the study recorded personality changes, it doesn't explain what caused them, but it does stand to reason that a threat on this scale has changed the way we live and manage our lives, it has changed the way we are able to cope with our lives and with each other.
Researcher's offer explanations and have said that young adults’ lives were arguably more disrupted by the pandemic lockdowns and policies than other age groups, because the pandemic significantly changed many of the things that young adults would normally do like going to school, or work and socialising.
While personalities have changed for the worse in the pandemic, it remains to be seen whether those changes will reverse now that lockdowns and social restrictions are over. The researchers' work is continuing so they should be able to establish if this is the case.
One of the limits of the study is that it does not have a control group. The researchers can’t compare their participants with people who didn’t live through the pandemic, because everyone lived through the pandemic in one way or another. (Source: https://www.vice.com)
Conclusion:
My conclusion is that we've been on auto-pilot for so long we've forgotten what it's like to be supportive, caring, patient, tolerant and compassionate. I've heard people say generally we've made ourselves less available, we've become more opinionated, and less co-operative. We have sunk, more than we have swam.
If you want to change you will. We can all pull back, become more reflective, so that we're less on auto-pilot, and more consciously living. Conscious living, life should be about putting others first, thinking about and being more caring, more understanding, being less opinionated, more supportive and more helpful. Instead we may make excuses.
