There’s something about this time of year, the muted metallic, junkyard palette of gold and pewter, jade, silver, rusted iron... last year’s lushness stripped bare and bleached, with skies like layers of rumpled denim and pearl, stonewashed... I’ll admit, I no longer fully trust the cycle of seasons, the complete return of teeming life year after year. I’ve read too much science, seen too much with my own eyes. I’ve cried over it, lost sleep over it, raged, carried signs, attended meetings and workshops, written articles, recorded podcasts, made art, banged drums, led group discussions, signed petitions, called legislators, organized events, and I’m continuing to do these things, try new things too. I’m currently organizing a free 2-hour community-building event in Mansfield, CT called “Facing the Climate Emergency Together” — look it up on Facebook, come join us, make some friends. It will be hopeful but real, sad but inspiring, and also, yes, fun. The green and growing season is coming, it will come, maybe with fewer insects, more heat. Life continues to be gorgeous, even in decline, even as we grieve, and struggle, and fail to find balance in a time of great imbalance. We can still find each other. We can still create and appreciate beauty. And you are not alone. And you are fine.
