Sacred Sunday || As a family we partook in Morrison’s memory today. Such a masterfully mindful woman. Her crafting gave a certain type of access to language, life and awareness that pushed you into the kind of sensual engagement that you didn’t know you needed until you were there. Something of her brilliance came through her speaking voice too: so velvety and warm. Watching, listening, feeling her spirit today, I was reminded of the imperative need that we humans have to surround ourselves with those who help us to access yourself, your senses, your mind and heart. I had been seeing posts of friends from various cities that had been hosting tributes and giving honor to Toni Morrison. A few weeks ago I shared with Karlotta at @marksquaredatl that I had not been able to do so and she said, "then let's do one!" So today we had "Tea with Toni" and shared with one another when we met her work and what she means to us as women and writers. It was a magical time! Guess what I watched yesterday during the Black Harvest Film Festival month? "Toni Morrison ; the Pieces I Am" documentary. It was so great to hear her speak about her work, her upbringing. Morrison faced lots of extreme criticism not only for the audience she wrote for but also the makeup of some of her novels. Though people were uncomfortable with the fact that she wrote specifically ABOUT black people and with them in mind, she stayed true to it. Some of her books were banned at various times, for a attempt to control what school children could have read about and to not insight a prison riot (the book Paradise was said to be too liberating) A really really great , beautiful and honest film about an extraordinary literary giant. She gifted us all with so much as a writer, professor and editor. I'm encouraged that she used her life in a way to uplift and publish other writers of color during the Black power movement and beyond it. Basically there was the idea that she could do what she could even if wasnt able to physically participate. ❤ Any documentary, I've seen from Timothy Greenfield Sanders always hits the mark (see HBOs the BlackList and Latino list documentaries). Toni Morrison has always been in a staple in my literary world. The first book I read by her was "Bluest Eye" when in my early twenties. I can't wait to see "The Pieces I Am", the doc/film on her.
