At the start of the year my wife and I decided to cut out all processed sugars and breads. One of my all time favorite books “The One Thing” said that it takes 66 days to build a new habit that replaces an old one. In the book “The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People” Stephen Covey talks about how humans are the only species on earth that can literally DECIDE to change in an instant. He gave a visual of us as humans being able to visualize ourselves leaving our body, looking at ourselves from a corner of a room, make an analysis and CHANGE whatever we want to change. I never really thought of us like that but it’s interesting. One of the main points of the book is that we’ve all been given scripts and we are either dictated by those scripts or fighting against them. Self reflection being one of the hardest things to do as a human…. I’m starting to see formulas.
66 DAYS + NEW HABITS = NEW YOU
I’ve passed 66 days now on this diet change that has seeped into a variety of other areas in my life. I’ve never questioned my defaults this much. Why am I doing, what I’m doing, at the time I’m doing them. TV, Social Media, Sports, Family, Religion, Relationships, Business, Health, etc etc. I feel like I’ve been doing an inventory quality control check systematically going through each aspect of my life. In the book “The One Thing” it also talks about how one KEYSTONE habit can lead to a domino effect knocking down several other things that create new change. Change seems to be a common theme that keeps following me over the years. Why change? What change? How to change? Is change good? Is change bad? Effects of change? I used to write every day in my Xanga blog back in the early 2000’s and felt like it was a good release of ideas, thoughts, and concepts. Like talking to a friend that didn’t argue back. Just a soundboard of my own voice…. my wife prob felt like that during our early dating years lol. Anyway, I’m gonna see if I can make a new habit of writing every day for the next 66 days. I think writing is a good habit to do anyway. The mind gets restless and putting them down on paper is a great way to process your thoughts and also reflect on your CHANGE!
YES + FOCUS (OTHERS) = GOOD / YES + FOCUS (YOU) = GREAT
Here is another thing I’ve noticed on this path of self development. The best investment you can make while working on yourself is YOU! During one of my inventory checks, I pulled out this box that said “other people’s opinion” and it was completely filled. I like to see myself as someone who doesn’t give a rats @ss what anyone else thinks but just being combative doesn’t really make you free from other people’s opinions. Defense mechanisms work for a time being but aren’t really long term solutions. On the negative sides, you can create walls to bad opinions but what about letting people down or making others disappointed? When you care and have empathy, letting people down is a common feeling if you learn the concept of NO. Yes is easy… NO is nasty. It creates conflict and builds tension. But so does YES. YES is like a slow slow slow tense burning death. NO is a quick strike but allows for new scenes to emerge and recovery from the hurt. When you say yes to something good, your also saying no to something great. <— I love that quote (not mine) So the best way to improve? Work on you. Not other people.
Now i’m not saying to be selfish and an indulging pleasure seeker. It’s about putting yourself through self discipline and refining your own character before seeking other people’s approval or energy. To tap into your own channel and develop your own systems instead of being hinged on others. So it’s more of an independent reliance instead of being self indulgent. I feel you can help others exponentially more when you just focus on building yourself up. To me it’s like playing basketball with a team and there is that one guy always focusing on the other players on what they do right or wrong. The best thing for the team is to develop your own skills to the best of your abilities and then integrate with others. Investing in things outside of your immediate realm of knowledge and experience could lead to compounded negative returns in the long run. In a world of distraction and the lust for “things” I believe the human species is having a harder time becoming specialists at few things and has become more of a bland “i know a little about everything” type of people. We are at war with the constant need for more. When is “more” too much?
The point is.. that the easiest thing to do to get everything better around you, is to first get better yourself. The best way to do that, is focus on you instead of everyone else. Best way to do that, is to stop being concerned with what other’s think and have a You VS You mindset that your just challenging yourself. The beauty of that is that your never behind or ahead against anyone else but yourself. That’s why i like golf…. You play against yourself and as your invest more into your game, you see immediate results. Eventually you can start playing against others if you choose to get competitive but to start, you get immediate gratification playing against your old self.
This realization really hit home for me when i was doing an inventory of my relationship with my wife. It was a lot easier for me to critique her living vs working on my own life. I would say if “she” would change or do this or that, things would work. Stephen Covey had this quote “I am the creative force of my life” which basically says… take that junk BACK! I started saying to myself… don’t blame my wife, just get better. Make new habits. Be nicer. Stop looking at what she does and just start focusing on what you do. Even when she would rip me up, i would try to remove myself from myself and coach myself through that situation. Meaning.. instead of starting with my feelings and becoming inside out, i tried going outside in and tried to extract the things i felt i could work on in the near future and put them in motion. The craziest thing is that it started working…. She eventually just started changing as she started seeing me change and started her own independent journey of self development.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT = GRAVITY (+)
I have this theory about relational gravity. We all have a gravitational pull. We are either pulling people into our gravity or being pulled into other’s. The less you work on your character, the more susceptible you are to falling into other’s orbit. The more refined your character, the more you attract people into yours. The idea is that if you want everything around you to change, just change yourself. Focus on 1 instead of 100. Eventually the 1 turns to 2 that turns to 10 that turns to 100 and so on. It seems the greatest people that have ever lived followed this same principle. Instead of hacking… start developing.
Well.. in the past i’d usually sign off with some possible out or excuse for not following through with 66 days of blogging but i’m gonna believe in myself and think that i can. Let’s see where this goes and like a lot of other things i’ve done in my life that have worked… having a positive attitude usually eventually leads to positive results. it just takes time.
