Welcome to the 25th The Week With Saqeef playlist! I listened a lot of cool music this week, some old favorites, some new tunes that really pulled my interest, but there is one very special song that I would like to talk about. The big featured track of this playlist is Green Rocky Road, an old folk song, and this song really holds a special place in my heart. I have been thinking a lot these last few days about a dear friend that unexpectedly passed some years ago. Her name was Rachel Cox, and she was one of the kindest, most genuine, and warm people I’d ever met. Rachel was a Resident Assistant and two years above me when I started college, and she was one of the most helpful, compassionate, and welcoming people at the college. I affectionately started calling her Mama Rachel because of the way she always made me feel and welcomed and loved and how she took care of everyone. She was an immensely talented individual and wonderful musician, and to hear her play guitar and fiddle and sing in the most wonderful and gentle soprano voice was one of the greatest spectacles of life. I remember Rachel singing Green Rocky Road, and there is even a recording on YouTube of her performing the song, dated 7-27-2014. I miss Rachel and the way she made everyone feel like they were relevant and welcome, and I always remember the way she sang this song. I hope you all will give her version, searchable on YouTube, a listen, as it’s one of the most beautiful things ever.
