The karaoke scene in Project Hail Mary is not in the book. It was Ryan's idea after hearing Sandra Hüller sing behind the scenes. Sandra agreed to sing in the movie if she got to pick the song and the one she picked was purely because she liked it. She had to ask her daughter if it was "cool" or not lol. Her daughter gave the approval and that's how Sign Of The Times by Harry Styles ended up in the movie.
This is one of those examples of a movie improving on the written material by Andy Weir. It's also an example that adaptations are adaptations and the live organism that is a film crew should be listened to. It reminds me a lot of the LOTR production. Andy Weir was right about Ryan. So right.
The scene was deeply and emotionally resonant to me. I cried and it wasn't even sad lol! For me it was seeing a stoic, socially limited, almost monastic character who expressed so few emotions (relatable relatable), going out of her comfort zone because why the fuck not, the world is ending Grace, we all need to do something crazy. I think it was a pointed message to him, foreshadowing what he would be soon asked to do.

This BTS scene of the Rocketeers / James going through lines from the script...
I cry about it cause that "You keep teaching Earth now", at least how im reading it, Rocky didn't want ti think about Erid or Adiren, cause then he'd miss them too much.
Learning about Earth is a good distraction for him
(Also James' little whale song impression is amazing)
i’m miles morales 🌻
I was rewatching today and couldn’t help but notice the fact that Grace looked like he couldn’t sleep because Rocky wasn’t there over him to watch each other sleep☹️
And maybe I’m reading too far into it but the way he holds his chest like he misses the presence of Rocky there too
Benoit Blanc having it all, holding court over this crowd, being recorded to be splashed across the internet for the world to see, standing there with all that pride and fame in his palm as he breaks down the case, and then... Damascus. Seeing. Understanding.
In the moment he understands, he makes his choice, and he throws it all away. He sacrifices his pride, his excitement, his reputation, all of it. He makes himself the fool, in a way that he is very aware will be seen around the world. To give one woman her last chance at freedom. One woman. Just one broken old woman, who is dying.
There's definitely also an element of still not knowing everything, and having the moment of clarity that it's Martha, she's the key in all this, and he would really really like to know how and why.
For all the grace demonstrated by Father Jud, it is Benoit's that astonishes me the most, I think. And it comes from his desire for truth over recognition. He really just wants the truth, regardless of what other people think of him. And he wants the truth so that others may benefit from it as well.
There's something decidedly inspiring in that.
