the moment the mord-sith’s memories returned, cara knew she needed to find richard and kahlan. even if this place was very different from home, it was her job to protect them, not only that, they were her friends. she hadn’t had a lot of luck finding richard, but kahlan was always one to stand out in the crowd, the type you couldn’t ignore even if you wanted to. ❝ mother confessor, ❞ the blonde’s tone lacked the malice it once held for the confessor, replaced with something akin to relief. ❝ so, you had a chance at a new life and chose to still judge the masses ?? i would like to say i’m surprised, but... ❞

“um, sorry. didn’t see you there.” cara was trying to sneak past the other to grab some punch, but she was out of luck — a gust of wind had knocked over her empty cup noisily, blowing sand all over the both of them in the process. beach parties were great in theory, but not so much in reality. “you really blend in with the sand dunes with that fake tan.” uncalled for? maybe a little. but she wasn’t sorry.

cara had been friends with khalid for a few years, pretty much ever since she’d started dating matt. the three of them had instantly clicked, which was easy enough because cara was the sort of person who got along with almost everyone. she liked khalid a lot, and she knew there was a softer side to him than ruby was seeing, so when her roommate had told her they’d been hooking up, cara had been encouraging. she’d reassured her that ruby wasn’t making a bad decision, that khalid was a good guy. that’s why when cara came back to the dorm a few nights later to find her friend in a heap of blankets, watching reruns of buffy the vampire slayer and sobbing into her pillow, she’d been shocked. ruby’s version of events made khalid look like a total asshole—something cara knew he wasn’t. yet she couldn’t help but be mad at him for how he’d treated her best friend. it didn’t make sense to her how two people who were both so great to everyone else could be so awful to each other. and to be honest, while she was trying not to take sides, she felt a lot of sympathy for ruby, especially after seeing the state she was in. so she’d texted khalid the next day and asked him to meet her for coffee at the usual cafe she and matt frequented off campus. matt had wanted to go with, but she’d had to tell him not to come, and that was another awkward conversation she’d have to have. khalid still didn’t know that she and matt had been conspiring the whole time to get he and ruby to hook up, and cara felt awful about that now that things had become so disastrous. she suspected matt would feel the same way, even if he might not know the details yet.

cara arrived at the cafe a little early, ordering a latte and sitting by the window, gazing across the street at the passersby. she’d decided to be as understanding and sympathetic with khalid as possible, even if she secretly wanted to bitch slap him just a little for hurting her best friend—just on principle, of course. she intended to get to the bottom of things, though, because the cruel, hurtful khalid ruby had described just wasn’t the guy she knew.

cara couldn’t help but be excited to go out. after all, it had been weeks since she’d left the house for anything but classes and grocery shopping. her new boyfriend insisted on being over the majority of the time, as if he wanted to monopolize all her time. he made snide comments when she talked about her friends, bailey especially. in truth, cara was beginning to think this relationship had run its course.

she’d gotten dressed in the type of outfit she knew her boyfriend would have frowned at and called “slutty,” but thankfully he was at his parent’s house in his hometown for the weekend, so he wasn’t there to kill her vibe. when she heard bailey’s car pull up outside, she went out, locking the door behind her and practically skipping down the pavement to get to the passenger side door. inside, she gave bailey a big kiss on the cheek. “thank you for rescuing me from my newly boring existence,” she said gratefully. “now! where are we going?”

cara liked her apartment. actually, she loved it—the clutter consisting of sketchbooks and novels and various knick knacks, the bay windows overlooking the city skyline, the succulents scattered over nearly every unoccupied surface and the art covering most of the eggshell-colored walls. but anticipating celia’s arrival had somehow made her loathe the place, to the point that she considered redecorating entirely. thankfully, the sudden madness occurred only right before celia was meant to come over, and therefore too late to make any drastic changes. it was probably for the best, but she couldn’t help feeling unusually self-conscious as she opened the door for her ex. “it’s a mess, sorry. come on in.”
