“god, how many times do i have to tell you? i’m a really, really bad driver. you do not want me driving your car, even if you are more tired than i am!” just as the words were out, the engine made a horrible sound and the car groaned to a stop. “um,” ruby said nervously, her voice barely more than a squeak, “please tell me you can fix that. we’re in the middle of nowhere!” surrounded only by cornfields and god knows what else. “should i call triple a?”

“i — i know you’re keeping something from me. i feel like i’m going crazy, but — i’m not. just tell me the truth. please.”

“betty?” ruby’s eyebrows shot up, lowering her phone and staring at alice. “you named your car betty?” this happens all the time. “really? how do you usually fix it, then?” she knew absolutely nothing about cars, and she doubted alice did either. “okay, not making me feel better.” the idea that they were so far from civilization that neither of them had any way to call for help was the opposite of comforting. “god, what are we supposed to do?” she was officially panicking — beginning to hyperventilate, vision blurring as dizziness set in. “oh my god. oh my god.”

ruby let out a little shriek of delight when gwen tackled her onto the bed, giggling and squirming a little under the other girl’s weight. her smile faded slightly at the mention of older guys, though. she honestly felt nervous around most guys, especially the ones gwen seemed to find the most appealing. she’d had her share of boyfriends, but she generally gravitated toward nerdier, non-threatening types—something gwen had always given her shit for as well. “sure. that sounds fun,” she said, looking up at her best friend with an expression nothing short of adoring. “you always throw the best parties.” the only kind of party ruby could tolerate was the kind with gwen at her side. she wasn’t the most social person, more of an introvert than anything, but gwen could always bring her out of her shell. “has coach really noticed? did she say something to you?” truthfully, their cheer coach’s approval meant less to her than gwen’s, but it still felt nice to hear about it.
“i just... i can’t believe you want to do this again. are you insane? do you have a death wish?” her eyes flashed, threatening to fill with tears as she glared at khalid. “i mean, what is wrong with you, honestly?” // @gvngsigns
