Once again I’d woken up in the freezing-cold Phoenix squad-room, shivering while she had the whole blanket tucked cosily around her; bare and cramped into the tiny space she’d graciously left for me in her bunk. True, there wasn’t much space for both of us in there, not with our combined pile of armour and weapons at our feet and scattered around the pillows. …still. She doesn’t even need any blankets, I thought to myself. Shin always ran hot.

A short sequel for my modern AU fic The Game (She’s in My Head Already). While Sabine is moving forward and winning games with her new team, Shin is stuck still, recovering from her injury.

Shin gazed down at her ankle, narrowing her eyes, feeling a spark of- something- break through her melancholy. She knew, logically, that only the most optimistic timeline would’ve had her on the field again by now. This logic didn’t matter. The plan was not going well.

Snap out of it, she growled at herself, feeling disgusted at the self-pity filling her insides. Shin did not dwell. She did not mope. She did not wallow in jealously, in annoyance, that Sabine was out there flying across the field while she was stuck here like a useless lump, her one useful talent snatched away. Her one skill in life being held hostage by layers of bruising, by seared and scarred cartilage, by swollen muscles.

The two of them had started out on opposite sides of a gaping chasm, throwing hate and scorn at each other across the black. Ahsoka had built a bridge. And yes, sometimes Sabine ventured onto it- but she always returned to her own side. Not looking, lest she see that the two of them were no longer on opposite sides…and that maybe, they never had been.
