Hey, I've recently started stimming by tapping a repetitive four-count rhythm over and over again (similarly to The Master from Doctor Who.) Is this appropriate, or am I perpetuating harmful stereotypes by mimicking a canonically "insane" character?
A neurodivergent person can never perpetuate stereotypes of neurodivergent people. It’s up to neurotypicals to stop being prejudiced, not neurodivergents to stop being, well, neurodivergent! There’s also no such thing as a harmful stereotype, only people being harmful because of how they view that stereotype.
Do note: It’s perfectly possible for a neurodivergent person to be prejudiced against other neurodivergent people displaying stereotypical behaviour. This is, again, not on the “stereotypical” one, but on the one judging the other for being “stereotypical”.
And it’s never, ever okay to throw stereotypical behaviour under the bus. For example, I saw a post earlier that said “Bipolar isn't just going from happy to angry all the time” and I complained to my partner because that literally is what it is for me. So I leave you with a quote from him: “Some people don't understand that they're sometimes actually just as bad when they try to defend a group they aren't part of.”
tl;dr: Displaying stereotypical behaviour is totally fine and if anyone has a problem with that they’re an ableist prick.
