🩸Titan

Desperate to fund his brother Rizal's sickle-cell treatments and escape violent loan sharks, he works the high-paying, grisly job of processing blood for Eccentra. Though he loathes the company as a moral affront and fears the cost of "ascension," he remains trapped by necessity, even skimming samples for the black market to survive the literal blood on his hands.

BACKGROUND

Born and raised in a provincial village in the Philippines, alongside Rizal and their parents.

Age 22 (11 years ago): Leaves for the US on an EB-3 visa (skilled/other worker category), recruited through a healthcare staffing pipeline into blood bank/lab-support work. Sends money back home for Rizal's treatment.

Green card process still pending — the Philippines is heavily backlogged in EB categories, so over a decade in, he has legal work status but not yet permanent residency.

Eventually lands at Eccentra directly, employer-sponsored, which becomes his best (and only) source of real insurance. Rizal is not on his plan.

NAME

Filipino-American

Malvar references Miguel Malvar, the last Filipino general to surrender to the US, and one of the war's more overlooked figures.

Emilio evokes Aguinaldo, the revolutionary who survived by negotiating & compromising with colonial power, whose legacy is contested precisely because he lived by choosing accommodation over further resistance.

The resister and the compromiser.

The Philippines was a literal US colony (1898–1946), taken from Spain and then held down through a war the US fought specifically to prevent Filipino independence. The Philippine-American War is one of the more whitewashed chapters of US imperial history. Add on top of that: Filipino labor has been systematically exported and exploited by global capital for a century — the parallel to Titan being drained for his labor by a system he can't leave.
