-- Contempt, that’s the word Lionel had always used. It was more than that now, Lex had clawed his way through power to make sure that he always had the upper hand. No more suffering, no more scared little kid.
No one under Lex’s payroll had spoken to Lionel or would during the house repairs. By design the monster had been blinded and now by design he’d be left virtually deaf. The old man was going to suffer and die alone. No more watching the sunset, no more beloved science articles. No one would speak to him, he would simply exist alone with cataracts and liver cancer slowly killing him, no access to healthcare besides that brandy he always nursed and washed down gas station advil with.
The man was pitiful, pathetic. Not even worth trying to kill for others to mourn. He would die of natural causes with no one even noticing. A body to be found by welfare check.
That was the plan until had spoken to the project. And the plan would continue after this roadblock was out of the way.
There was still more research to be done, even as the boy was fleeing.
Most interesting, Lionel hadn’t died by the boy’s hand. Conner had displayed an allegiance. Coupled with the suggestions of epigenetic memories, it seemed that Clark was winning out in this war between the heaven and hell.
He strolled into the place, whistling at the damage and announcing his presence. Good thing he didn’t live here-- look at this pathetic sack of shit, having to sleep with a giant hole in his house. And who knew when the repairmen would find time in the schedule to fix it up?
“Well, I heard you had quite the scare, but I didn’t imagine that it was this bad, Care to fill me in?” He sat down at the broken kitchen table, leaning back in the chair. Lionel had tried to give the project brandy, interesting. Lex tossed it back, blanching at the taste even as he choked it down. He’d need it to weather this conversation.
A cough as it burned, too rough for his pampered palette. “Your taste in alcohol is still shit, Dad.”
The man who had pushed Jason out the window had come back. Conner was tense. A little scared but trying not to show it. The man was going to hurt Jason again.
Conner had been tucked away in the room he'd woke up in, watching everyone milling around using his x-ray vision. He was still healing. Still sick. Mom had said he would be alright though! That made him happy, that he'd feel better soon.
He had to keep the man from getting to Jason again. He looked for his friend -- saw him and Dick on the roof talking. Jason was safe.
But the man was still here. No one else had noticed, so Conner pulled the monitors off his chest and stood up, a little wobbly. Made his way to the elevator doors to cut the man off, make him go away.
"Hey!" He frowned, arms crossed. Pouting like, well, a child. A very dangerous and powerful child. "You aren't supposed to be here. You need to leave."

-- Conner liked tea. Tea was good. He smiled as he sipped from his cup. Sometimes it was nice to just be quiet, and Raven knew that too.
Finally, he did say something, only recently starting to open up to Raven. To anyone at all, really. But mostly with Raven. There were things that neither of them talked about. But those scary moments felt like not yet, not like never.
Eventually.
“I wish there was a way to...” He frowned, looking for words. There’s all these words he knew that he’s trying to find concepts for. But they’ve been working on that lately. Welcome to the world, here’s history and philosophy crash course.
Funny, some of it he’d already known.
“Like sparring but even more safe. It’d be our brains. Maybe just sharing tips is safer?”

au: conner somehow connects with dick’s psychic split and ends up projecting into irl bruce’s head
-- Conner was floating, watching people walking around and argue. His body was in the bed, not quite gone yet. The mind sailing away while the body healed.
He saw an old man, but this wasn’t really the old man. It was interesting, something new to look at. There was a line that appeared and he followed it. It wasn’t as if he had anything else to do. Watching everyone fighting was boring!
The man was in a large parlor, sitting on a couch. Conner suddenly felt heavy, heard his bare feet smack onto the floor as he dropped down. Dropped out of thin air, looking around at everything.
“Is this where you live?”
a few weird half-drabbles i wanted to do after this episode, not in any particular order or actual canon events of the episode adherence
//
black and red fabric tore beneath scissors, the man in a blue sweater was inspecting the wound as the man he’d saved passed him a clotting agent and sterile field bandage --
basic first aid kits in the field.
you say ‘in the field’ like we’re in some war.
“he caught me from fifty stories up but he got shot? look at his shirt.”
oh! he knew those colors. a little bird always chirping and hopping around-- robin. he had to be protected because he was young, maybe too young, but clark could only do so much to--
//
the man’s skin was covered in dark purple bruises spreading from the bullet wounds in his chest. dick had seen plenty of bullet wounds in his life, but none that caused this reaction. it was like his body was falling apart. he pressed the bandage down.
the man, weak as he was, gripped his wrist and tried to wrestle it away. crunch.
dick bit back the pain with a wince. he pried the boy’s eyelid open, saw green in the veins in his eyes.
“he’s kryptonian. look at his eyes. it’s K poisoning.” dick started pulling the medical tape and bandage off. both robins in the standard emergency mode, working as a seamless unit. even as jason was bickering, he was handing off the tools in a seamless manner as dick kept giving first aid.
the detective and robin both on the case of the dying savior. “do we have anything to dissolve the coagulant? i was right, he’s not just some kid in a fuckin’ superman shirt.”
“no, forceps though.” unpleasant, but both understood the sawbone nature of first aid.
dick started probing at the wound for the first bullet. “block the light with your cape.” there, a glowing green treasure. he handed it to robin. the cape flicked up again, a tense silence for a moment as the second bullet was pulled out.
“did you know superman had a kid?”
//
car engine rumbled, lights passing on and off overhead. he had his head in robin’s lap as the kid bandaged himself up in the backseat. the conversation in the front seat faded in and out as he watched the kid silently.
“why does it matter if this superman had a kid?” a woman in purple asked.
“because he’s the last of his kind. he’s kryptonian.”
“krypton. i remember them, the whole planet just vanished one day. the strangest thing.”
“krypto?” conner muttered, half laying in robin’s lap as the kid bandaged himself up, looking like he’d been through hell. keep an eye on robin.
robin looked down at him, warm fingers laying against his neck and checking his pulse. “who the hell are you?”
“jason--”
“conner.” he sat up, still feeling an ache in his bones. “where’s my dog?” he looked around the van frantically, feeling too closed-in in the van. “let me out.” he looked at robin, pleading with him. “they took my dog.”
“who took your dog?”
“i need to get him back.” he needed to make sure krypto was okay! he cocked his head, straining to hear. he was! he was suffering, hurting, crying! “robin, where are they taking us?”
robin went wide-eyed and smiled. “we’re going home.” he leaned back in the seat with a wince and groan. he’d been hurt.
“who hurt you? was it the old man? cadmus labs?”
robin turned to the man driving the car. “shit, that’s luthor.”
“lex luthor.” the man he had wanted to meet so badly and now never wanted to hear his name again. “are you taking me to see him?” he was suddenly very, very afraid. he knew what pain felt like now. he didn’t want to feel it again.
“who are you, conner?”
be careful who you trust. but he could trust robin. of course he could.
“i’m a person. it means my life will be full of hardship and joy.” he half-parroted what eve had told him.
“conner, who are your parents?” the driver asked.
“what’s your name?” conner asked instead.
“uh, grey.” grey looked at him in the strange little mirror. “do you have any family we can take you to?”
“no. i need my dog.”
robin smiled at him again, bumped him on the shoulder with his glove. “how’d you get the cool superman tattoo?”
“it’s a barcode. x zero zero dash zero zero one three.” he grimaced as the words left his mouth almost automatically. “my name is conner.”
robin looked at him, some strange expression on his face. “conner, of course. hey, tell me more about your dog. is he kryptonian too?”
“his name is krypto. he’s all white and he can shoot heat from his eyes. the men with guns must have him, robin. he’s being hurt. we have to save him.”

-- It was a clusterfuck. Incredibly absolutely ruined, all his hard work. He hadn't included Deathstroke in his April plans became the bastard had killed him. And so Deathstroke had taken Dick captive. Not as Ribin with weapons and tools. Just Dick Grayson.
Batman wasn't coming to save him, and the Titans were doing fuckall.
Redbreast had to. He had considered ignoring it, not about to let Slade yank him around like this. Then he realized that was the point.
Deathstroke knew Redbreast was Todd, somehow. Fuck. So would Dick, probably. He was playing both of them. Dick would find out Jason was alive abs Jason would have to sit through Dick's interrogation.
Deathstroke hadn't left a trap, which made it worse. All Redbreast had to do was walk in there and free Dick. Same window washer setup he'd fallen from as he'd died. Jesus, Slade had gone all out.
Jason stood at the edge of the window, hidden in shadows. A ghost of Robin, returned. Don't freak out. You can just run away before he starts talking to you.
"Close your eyes." He warned before stepping into the light.
He took a breath, climbing out onto the creaking metal to work on the bindings. Don't look down. Don't look down. Panic curled at his chest & he tried to breathe through it. But the ghost couldn't so anything but remember.
conner and rae just doodling on each other constantly bc art friends. at least one of them always has charcoal/paint/clay on their forehead or face. the tower absolutely has a whole art studio that they both just spend the whole day in.
