Vera Lennox Cowen wasn't usually a spontaneous person. Her life had been controlled in one way or another in its entirety until recently and it was only just now that she had the freedom to explore what life truly had to offer. Which was why she had stolen her brother's invite to Carroll's most prestigious event. Jesse was opting out and spending the day with his boyfriend anyway, so what harm was it really if she had decided to take his place?
Franny was occupied with her tablet and the freedom to order anything her heart desired on door dash and mom had even approved a movie rental (or two) at the hotel while she attended the party because adults needed a night off too. Of course, her daughter hadn't protested too much to an evening alone, having been begging for the opportunity to prove her grownupness for months now.
She stood among the crowd, quietly at the back, still unsure of mingling alone, as Joel gave his speech and clapped politely along with the rest once he opened the reception. As the bodies dispersed toward the bar, she gently looked through the gift bag (wondering if there was way to snag an extra for Jesse) and pulled the itinerary, feigning interest in the schedule as her eyes scanned the faces of Carrollites - most she remembered despite being gone for years.
Falling on one that sent the air from her lungs. One she could never forget. Orion Powell. Looking quite dashing in a suit as he chatted with a woman at the bracelet station, seeming to protest as she slipped one on his wrist. Vera bit back at her bottom lip and after a hesitant beat, took a confident step toward the same table. "I hope there's at least an even number of people otherwise this could get awkward," she joked as casually as she could muster as she reached for her own bracelet, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and hope over whether or not he would remember her.
