The nights are getting cold, but he hasn’t made the switch from summer to autumn yet. His battered leather jacket does little to ward off the chill, so he paces restlessly near the car parked by the tunnel entrance and makes fists in his pockets to preserve whatever warmth he can. It’s tempting to smoke, to burn away some of the irritation pooling in his chest, but he refrains. He made promises. And besides, Fallon still has his favourite lighter.
It’s been 20 minutes since he arrived, and only now does he hear feet on the pavement other than his own. He recognizes her gait just by sound, allowing him to turn and fix her with a preset look that is as weary as it is annoyed. Maybe it’s the residual military training, or a flaw in his character, but lateness has always irked him. She had asked him to meet her here, and it had sounded important enough to be on time. And armed, as he was, with a handgun tucked in the back of his jeans. Perhaps he was mistaken.
“What are we doing out here?” he asks, straight to the point.
