Also I think one of the reasons Lamar gravitates towards Trevor is that Lamar & Franklin both had their struggles, but they also had something that resembled a safety net which prevented them from ending up in circumstances as bad as some of their peers (Tonya, JB.) I think Lamar knows that he’s more fortunate than others, in some ways - that thing people say about how “nobody protects black boys” comes to mind.

Trevor, in spite of his whiteness, represents a worst case scenario for someone in their economic bracket - he (appears to) lacks family, community or even basic things like an education wholesale, and is completely unhinged as a result. That easily could’ve been Lamar, without a couple key factors in his life: his mom, for one, since he’s one of the few people in the game who seems to have had a good relationship with their mother while Trevor’s mom is so… like that.

And still, Trevor’s whiteness allows him to act out in ways that Lamar could never get away with. He goes on random rampages in a heavily populated area, kills service members and outlasted a nationwide manhunt. Lamar is half Trevor’s age and not nearly as wild, but the game suggests that he’d immediately be put down by authorities just for kidnapping another gangster: he might be aggressive like Trevor and impulsive like Trevor, he might be grateful that he didn’t have to go through the kind of stuff Trevor did when that was a very real possibility for him, but he lacks the privilege to fully adopt the “crazy dude” persona they both sell themselves as. Shit must be irritating.
