since I'm linking to a lot of stuff that I've been reading/thinking about/interested in lately: I'm quite interested in an article Stacey Patton has said she is working on about framing racial socialization into Whiteness* as a type of ACE (Adverse Childhood Event; a category of experiences during the developmental period which can result in PTSD,) which I think fits quite neatly into some stuff Ive seen many people discussing about the impact of, for example, being raised in evangelical Christianity, as well as discussions of the impact that the social expectations around masculinity can have on kids. I feel it also does a lot of tying together of things like child abuse and trauma & broader social structures/dynamics (she has done a lot of work on the abuse of Black children, exploring both the causes and the fallout both the personal and societal,) which is something I'm really interested in. The way we raise kids in the US (not saying this is unique to the US, just that both she and I live in the US and that is what we have experience with and therefore what we are discussing,) perpetuates all of the most harmful components of the worst types of power structures in our society. Thinking deeply about (& healing from!) our own trauma is not something that can be done separately from examining the social structures and dynamics that incentivize the kinds of treatment that traumatize people. It's really really all connected.
*here's a screenshot with an excerpt from a post where she talks about the article she is writing which lists some of the reasoning behind using this framework.
