Trichodiadema sp.

Trichodiadema is another of the many genera in the Aizoaceae, or Ice Plant Family, and it is characterized by small succulent leaves with a tuft of radiating hairs at the tip. The plant pictured was grown from seed from the northern part of South Africa's Little Karoo, and it may be a form of the widespread Trichodiadema densum, though we are not certain of this. It seems to be settling in happily in the new crevice garden at the Ruth Bancroft Garden.

Trichodiadema densum

Trichodiadema is a genus in the Ice Plant Family (Aizoaceae) native to southern Africa. The species are distinctive in having succulent leaves (looking like tiny pickles) topped by a tuft of radiating hairs. This one is Trichodiadema densum, from South Africa's dry Little Karoo and Great Karoo regions.

Trichodiadema peersii

Trichodiadema is a genus in the Aizoaceae, or Ice Plant Family, native to southern Africa. This one is Trichodiadema peersii, which comes from near Willowmore, South Africa. Species in the genus vary in their flower color (white, in this case), but they have unique small succulent leaves with a tuft of radiating bristles at the tips (trichodiadema means “crown of hairs”).
