#goechala 10. The final day of any trek evokes mixed feelings in me. On the one hand there is the anticipation of what awaits you in civilisation, on the other is the last hours of enjoying the wilderness. I am no hermit and sometimes I yearn for a soft pillow, clean freshly laundered sheets and a mattress that I can sink into, hot showers, ordering food off a menu, and the occasional single malt. There are stories to be heard from the family and friends. And then there is my work which I enjoy. On the other had there is a certain stillness of the mind, the solitude, and the refuge of the wilderness, the mountains. I have learned to reconcile those two, but imperfectly. I feel lucky that I can, however imperfectly. I ponder on those questions as I walk up to and then around the #monastery at #tsoka. The water in the pond is still. Birds chirp and hop from one little island in the pond to another. The first rays of the sun fall on the mountains in the background. Sunlight begins to fill up the valley. I absorb the warmth and I feel a smile appearing on my face. I remembered the philosophy of the Buddha’s message, middle path - everything, but in moderation. I am contented. We begin our final hike to retrace the trail from Tsoka to Yuksom. It’s a long day of nearly 10 hours of hiking. The familiar routine of down to the bridge on the river, across and up again starts. It’s now quite warm during the day. The fog has deserted us. We are at the mercy of shadows. Cascades of green-blue water form inviting pools. Inviting, but out of reach. The tall peaks are gone. Layers of stout and curvy hills replace the jagged, sharp angularity. Unseen birds call, six chirps, each one louder than the previous. At first you don’t notice, then you count. And then you wonder if the bird can count. And then, why six? You see the first dogs in a while. Where there are dogs, human habitations are not far. Then the first fields and the colourful houses on the outskirts of Yuksom welcome you back to the world you left behind. We pass through a gang of kids playing football into the bustle of Yuksom Bazar. Kokchurang looked different in sunlight and clear skies. The forest, the mountains, and the river seems to have torn apart the mountain felt different. Boulders the size of houses littered the river bed. From #kokchurang it is time to go to #tsoka. This was a new trail through dense forest. It was very narrow and surprisingly it was a pack animal free trail! That meant all the special manoeuvres to avoid dung were unnecessary. At a few places we scrambled over or under fallen trees. It is a beautiful trail that rises from Kokchurang to Phedang. The mountains are on your left with Pandim dominating the line. The river is out of sight but once in a while the sound of a cascade filters through the forest. There are musk deer droppings and wild cat scat on the trail. At several places the trail is only one person wide. Many sections had packed snow, hard and slippery. At other places the melting snow left a morass, more than ankle deep. Flowers made a welcome reappearance. A splash of colour in the endless greens and browns. Insects too become more visible. From Phedang starts the steepish descent to Tsoka. At times you wonder if you had really climbed all that distance. And then the #rhododendrons reappear. In the five days since we passed in the other direction a lot more trees had bloomed. A carpet of red lay at several places where trees had already shed their blossoms. Rhododendrons bear flowers once in a year, between late April and early May based on temperature and other climatic variables. How do plants remember? How are they programmed? They lack a brain or more technically, a central nervous system. What is their seat of memory? Do they feel like animals do? They are alive too. Questions, weird questions, stupid questions. To me it is unmistakable that plants and fungi and lichens are making decisions. Life makes choices to survive. The first two days take you from Yuksom to Tsoka via Sachen. Many intrepid hikers go directly to Tsoka, but I feel that a 10 hour first day is not the best way to ease yourself into a long trek. The trek is follows a well laid out trail through a dense mixed temperate-tropical forest. This is one of the highest altitude forests of its type in the world. You walk on a well worn trail that descends down to bridges across the Prek Chu and Rathong Chu (chu = water, river in Nepali) and then up again. You gain altitude through this combinations of descent followed by ascents. At the end of these you have crossed four bridges. The water in the streams is blue-green with frequent cascades of white. All along the sounds of the streams keep you company - out of sight at times but always present. The sound of water flowing is likely the most ancient of soothing sounds, like the a gentle breeze or a light rain, we are programmed to recognise it and feel good. On the way from Sachen to Tsoka, trekkers halt for a tea break at the little dhaba at Bakhim. The sweet masala chai accompanies some great conversations as travellers share their experiences - those on their way back to Yuksom giving you encouragement, tips and information. The vegetation starts to change as you climb from Bakhim conifers and oaks along with the first magnolias and rhododendrons make their appearance. A fallen tree I saw is the tallest I have seen outside of the giant redwood forests in California. That one looked like a thousand years old (see human for scale). The white magnolias are quite large in size, most nearly 15 cm across. Their tall trees almost bare of leaves look somber. When you crush their fallen petals, they release a soothing fragrance. The bright red rhododendrons on the other hand are a riot, rather playful in contrast to the plain magnolias.
