Sneak Peak for This Thing Called Love, my king!au
I wanted to give yāall a little sneak peek of my king!au bc Iāve seen anons asking about fem!queen authors, so hereās about 169 words of the first chapter ft Farrah (Freddie) Bulsara and Oscar the cat
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā London smelled a bit dank from the rain that had stopped about a hour back, but it smelled like freedom when Farrah Bulsara stepped off of the bus and onto the wet sidewalk. She pulled the scrap of newspaper out of her pocket to check the address, the advertisement reading Seeking Flatmate in London, Must Help Pay Rent nearly worn off the this paper. Sheād exchanged a few texts with a polite girl named Brianna.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āMrrah,ā Oscar complained from his crate, seemingly having been woken up from his nap. Farrah lifted the crate to her face and kissed the catās nose through the bars.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āHush, darling,ā she murmured as he huffed. āWeāll be there soon, I promise. You must behave so that Brianna and her flatmate will let you live with us, love. Will you quiet down if I promise you treats with your dinner?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā He blinked slowly, then laid back down with a sort of sigh. Farrah laughed as she continued down the road towards her new home.

River in films: The Thing Called LoveĀ (1993) as James Wright // dir.Ā Peter Bogdanovich
āWhen we were preparing the film, we thought he was too big a name and that he wouldnāt be interested since itās essentially written from a womenās point of view. River wanted to sing in a film and this would give him a chance to sing. When we spoke on the phone, I said, āI have just one question for you. Youāve never played a character with such an edge to him. How would you do it?ā and he said, āsilence.ā I thought that was such a brilliant response. [...]Ā He really got into it. I didnāt meet him until he was into the part. By the time he came to California, he was into the role. He was adorable and a great help on the picture. He had what Hemingway called āa built-in shit detector.ā We had two writers on the script and he would complain if he didnāt like the lines, but he was glorious to work with.ā
ā Interview With Peter Bogdanovich About River Phoenix, Aug 2012, Huffington Post.
āLook out Music City, ācause Iām here now and I aināt never leaving.ā
āAlthough The Thing Called Love was a modern love story set in Nashville, Phoenix turned the movie into vehicle to show his contempt for his stardom. Changing his character into a moody temperamental singer, he insisted on playing it with a sneering scowl on his face. āThe producers were worried because River chose a darker, more introspective way to play the part than was written,ā explained Moyle. āAt one point I said āRiver, who the hell are you playing here? I donāt get it.āā
Phoenix then admitted he had modelled James Wright on the less flattering side of rock icon Bob Dylan, as seen in in D.A. Pennebakers documentary Donāt Look Back about his unhappy 1965 English tour during which he was booed off stage at Londonās Royal Albert Hall for going electric. āIn that movie Bob Dylan displayed probably the most sour reaction to stardom possible,ā explained Moyle. āI donāt think he smiled once in the whole movie and there are shots of Joan Baez gazing lovingly at him while heās just scorning her and all his friends.ā
ā Lost in Hollywood: The Fast Times and Short Life of River Phoenix (1995)
"We rewrote most of the picture while the writers were there - and the actors more than me," said Bogdanovich during a Seattle visit last week. "I trusted him. I gave him tremendous freedom. His input was so brilliant."
Bogdanovich still finds it hard to talk about Phoenix in the past tense. He believes "his spirit is undiminished."

"It's very, very rare to find an actor who's interested in the whole work," said Bogdanovich, recalling Howard Hawks' comment that most actors are trying to win a popularity contest in every scene.
"River didn't care about how it reflected back on him. He lets her character win in the end. He lets his character be portrayed as not very likable. Sometimes I had to pull him back because I felt he was going too far. Like most young actors, he's into a kind of method, and he got so deeply into this role that he seemed moody and abrasive at first. But then he'd say, āDon't let me give you any trouble.ā I didn't know how fully he was into the part. I didn't meet the real River until three or four weeks after we finished shooting.āāĀ
(...)
"He was very proud of it," said Bogdanovich. "He was not simply an actor in the picture."Ā
Thereās a light that shines forever.
