12 Thoughts For The Rear View: UFC 179

1- We've been cursed, in a lot of ways, with awful ass injuries and some blagh on paper cards. One thing you can't say we've had are bad title fights. Either they've been insanely dramatic (Weidman/Machida and Hendricks/Lawler come to mind) or featured finishes (TJ/Barao, TJ/Soto, Ronda's two fights). After what felt like injury after injury over the past two months, the MMA world got a little bit of a return on it's investment if you're a fan as Aldo and Mendes had a stupendous fight. Upon second viewing, I'm not quite sure if I'd put it above the Weidman/Machida and Hendricks/Lawler bouts BUT that was the best fight I've seen probably since July. Just a great fight with two absolute warriors.

2- People talk about Conor McGregor being overrated or protected or what have you BUT consider this: at the end of the fight, neither the champion nor the conquered challenger talked of a rematch. They BOTH talked about wanting to fight McGregor. That's a sign of how good McGregor is at what he does---and also a sign of how vital he is to this 145 lb division.

3- Let's touch on some McGregor-Aldo stuff briefly. 1) Jose Aldo's speedy combinations will give McGregor trouble; 2) McGregor's money punch is a tight, precise uppercut. Mendes was able to find Aldo's chin considerably with uppercuts all night. If McGregor has a chance, his biggest chance comes on THAT money punch; 3) McGregor would have a significant reach advantage and that's beneficial to him; 4) THE BIGGEST factor in this fight IMO? Aldo comes from a camp that's proven time and time again that it can get the most out of it's fighters in the clutch moments of big fights. I don't think John Kavanagh has done that and furthermore the bloom seems to be slowly eeking of that rose as well.

4- Speaking of coaching: I wonder how much of Chad Mendes making such massive improvements is due to just seasoning (was a pretty green prospect at UFC 142; had significant time to improve between the first and second fights) or great, improved coaching from a pro in Duane Ludwig.

5- Jose Aldo's chin is beyond reproach. His striking defense had a few gaps and holes in it though. Maybe that's just a sign of aggression?

6- A lot of people hate Phil Davis, some of it irrationally, and I can see why some people wouldn't be thrilled with him. That said, I STILL believe that in the hands of a proper striking coach, Davis can change his game around. He throws a lot of strikes on one foot, often times going back and more often than not, attempting to bail out before the punch even lands. That said, if you're not super big (like Rumble) or a tremendous counter wrestler (like Rashad Evans), he's going to find a way to more often than not drag you to the mat. I know people aren't hot about Davis vs Bader but honestly, I can see far worse matchups. I'd rather he fight a guy like Bader than say Jan Blachowicz and potentially knock off another top guy in a division desperate for top guys.

7- I was curious about how Jon Jones opponents do in their fight IMMEDIATELY after losing to him. Since Jones became champion, his opponents are 4-4 in their next fight. I thought it was worse originally but I forgot that Shogun beat the human shell that was Forrest Griffin. That said, it does paint a picture of how fighting a guy like Jones completely impacts you as a fighter. For comparison sake, Jose Aldo's opponents (in the UFC) after fighting him for the title? 3-1 with Mark Hominick being the lone loser. Also of note? Two of Aldo's opponents have either retired (KenFlo) or not fought since (KZ).

8- Fabio Maldonado serves a purpose. He's the guy who gets the crowd going by way of heart, balls and whatever he happens to call fighting ability at the time. Treasure him, folks. For he is to be treasured. Also give me Maldonado vs Dan Henderson.

9- Neil Magny will never get the credit he deserves but remember: he is but a young developing prospect. No, he's not beating Rory Mac or Tyron Woodley but I think people underestimate just how hard it is to win consecutive fights in a row at the highest level of MMA. Beating 5 guys in a row, from hyped prospects like William Patolino and Alex Garcia to proven veterans like Tim Means is impressive no matter how you opt to slice it. If one slices such things.

10- I can't remember who pointed it out or where I saw the stat but somebody pointed out that Brazil cards have an awful lot of submission finishes in comparison to cards in the States. Not sure if that's a fluky coincidence or anything.

11- Gilbert Burns has yet to be tested (so to speak) but I'd put him in the mix with guys like Warrely Alves, Pedro Munhoz and Thomas Almeida as "guys who bear watching from Brazil" in 2015.

12-On that last bit, it sure feels like Brazil hasn't produced a top prospect in a while. You assume that it's just a matter of waiting (or so you'd hope that's the case) but it sure feels like in some respects, the gap between the average Brazilian fighter and the average American fighter is widening.
