^^^^ article from the independent with key petitions/ funds for those unable to attend protests
some of the statements coming out from uk politicians today after protestors in bristol pulled down the statue of slave trader edward colston.
calling the actions of protestors “criminal” and demanding “justice”
what about the justice for the 100,000 people colston took from africa to be slaves in the caribbean ? or the 20,000 lives lost on these journies.
he was the criminal. this is justice.
YES. that is literally the whole point. we should hold ALL historical figures to the same standard. no one is beyond critique.
good. we should do that too. why should we idolise a man whose policies killed 3 million bengali people in an entirely man made famine. let alone the countless other casualties of maintaining an illegitimate empire.
the uk is racist and always has been.
remember with all the amazing support for the black lives matter movement we’re seeing online, the general public voted these racist slavery sympathisers in. they do not agree with you. don’t be quiet, but stay safe. your life is important.

Manchester right now.
There are rumours of EDL/far right groups turning up to disrupt the march, hopefully the numbers of people present will put them off.
WARNING UK BLM PROTESTORS
You may already be aware but in case you are not, far-right racist and ex-EDL affiliated T*mmy Rob*nson and hundreds of his goons are planning on marching this weekend. They say they are marching to defend statues but they will be no doubt marching to: antagonise, goad, cause unrest, tensions in the hope that they provoke the peaceful protestors and have them attack with violence to paint the movement in a bad light.
I believe the BLM London events have already been called off in fear already.
If you encounter these monsters, rise above their taints, lift your heads high, march on and be vigilant. Most importantly, STAY SAFE!!!
To the people saying that tearing down a historical statue of a slave trading asshole is erasing history and that "we should embrace our history and how far we've come": that history is still available in history books and historical texts. This is not erasing anything and history will not disappear just because a scar from our soil was removed. It was a statue that represented and glorified past oppression that is still alive today.
A fitting end to a statue that should have been torn down years ago. Go fuck yourselves.
DEAR FELLOW UK-ERS. If you’re looking for somewhere to donate this is a great legit option. The organisation and fund was set up by a host of black activists and organisers in the UK and they’ve been going since 2016.
Racism is not an ‘American issue’. Racism is rife in the UK.
I know that money is tight for a lot of us at the moment with many of us not receiving our full pay - myself included. I chose to donate my gym membership to the UKBLM fund; my gym is government ran and therefore isn’t charging customers whilst it’s closed. It gives me a real kick knowing that I’m forwarding money that I would normally pay to the government on to the BLM movement.
