A little assistance, please.

I'm working on adding to my mending supplies. Right now it's a pair of needles, some upholstery thread and an old leather glove finger as a thimble. The pile of repairs has a pair of jeans, couple shirts needing buttons, a ragged sweater, and some dirrerent split seams and whatnot.

Without just going to supermegazilloionaire online store and buying a kit, what would be a few good things to have? I'd consider it a good investment in being to not have to buy new stuff because I'm (reasonably) lazy.
