"you forgot one thing: i would never open up to a stupid person like you. like i said, the help comes with your death", she replied very rudely to zuko, looking away with disgust. "you don't have the disposition to resolve conflicts. you're still immature and dumb. i don't know how most of the population accepted you as the new fire lord!" ziyue took a piece of water from a puddle and threw it at the man without any resistance. "stop approaching me as if we were friends. you're so despicable that you make me want to vomit. there's nothing you can take from me: i am completely dead inside, and no help will bring me back to life!"
Zuko stared at her after the splash of water hit his chest. Then, against all reason, a rough breath of amusement escaped him at the sheer intensity of her hatred. If he hadn’t already learned that Ziyue meant every venomous word she said, he might have thought she was trying to provoke him on purpose.
He looked down at the damp fabric clinging to his chest, then back up at her with his brow raised. “You know,” he said dryly, “most people just say they don’t like me.” The corner of his mouth twitched faintly before the expression faded. He could feel the fury rolling off her like a storm tide, but beneath it there was something hollowed out and raw enough that even he recognized it.
Zuko’s gaze sharpened slightly, though his voice stayed calm. “That’s not true.” He folded his arms loosely across his chest, still unconcerned by the water she’d thrown at him. “I never said we were friends… but I know what it’s like to feel like your anger is the only thing keeping you standing, what it’s like to think if you stop hating for even a second, there’ll be nothing left inside of you.” A faint bitterness crept into his voice then, old scars surfacing beneath the calm. “You’re not the only person who feels ruined by the war.”
He exhaled slowly through his nose and glanced briefly at the puddle beside her before looking back at her face. “So if you want to insult me, threaten me, throw water at me like an angry alley cat, fine. I’ve taken far worse.” Another small flicker of reluctant amusement crossed his expression. “But stop acting like I’m stupid for wanting better for the world, and for you.”
