Mortality.

In truth the age of sixteen was anything but sweet.

It was high school parties with warm wine coolers. It wasn’t school dances and sloppy kisses. For the teen it was days spent running with his make shift wolf pack. Elijah and the Avery girl had starting letting the younger boy tag along on their nightly excursions, the younger boy beating the soles of his shoes on the pavement to keep up with the older pair as they howled in the night. He knew the blonde was dangerous. He could see it in her eyes and hear it in the tone of her voice. But he kept his suspicions to himself, too thrilled to be a part of his brother’s happiness. Elijah and the blonde were inseparable and so Isa became their third limb attached when he could be.

Short summer nights become frigid winters.

 Sun rise sun set.

The laughter of life and the bang of a gunshot.

It took two days; two days of quiet and worry. Meredith seemed hardly bothered.

“He’s mad at me. Fucking brat. Just like your shit father.”

Isa paced. He waited in the empty room for a knock at the window or the sound of the front door. He waited and waited.

When they got the news she had laughed in the face of the police at their door. There was no way her eldest was dead. Gunned down? That was bullshit. But she followed them out of the apartment building. Leaving Isa to wait again.

When Meredith returned she was stumbling, held up by some stranger who whispered into her hair. She laughed like a teenager. She laughed like she hadn’t left one son to stew in panic and the other dead in the street.

“Where’s Elijah?” He asked, shoving the nameless bar sleeze away. She stumbled, her balance lost and eyes widening.

It hit her all over, the night of drinks no longer holding her memory hostage. She vomited on the floor and began to scream.

The funeral was quiet. Isa looked around for the Avery girl but she wasn’t there. Instead Isa and his mother stood next to a hole in the ground while they lowered him in.

They weren’t immortal.

They wouldn’t live forever.
