He occasionally got kicks out of going to random fortune tellers, seeing what new scam they’d throw his way, and usually, he didn’t care much or even remember the things they told him, but this latest one--her words wouldn’t leave him. ‘You are in hell right now, John Constantine. Something is missing in your life. Find it.’ She’d said it after turning over a card, ‘The Star’, it read, the image of the kneeling woman pouring water out into both a lake and the earth, stars shining behind her. He’d never bothered to study these things in-depth, but he could tell it was telling this woman something, that she wasn’t just bullshitting him. Or maybe he was just easy to read.
Undoubtedly, however, she was right. He was missing something, more than something. In reality, he was missing a lot, but only one echoed in his head repeatedly. And it was so goddamn cliche. So he went home, crossed his legs and held his palms out, open, and he let his mind drift over to wherever hers could be.
❝ Can you hear me, Zee? ❞ Oh, how he hoped so.
