The Crossroads // Vexenchillingworth
This was hardly a new sensation to him.
The first time, it’d come with an edge of panic to it. Who wouldn’t be, given his circumstances? Outwardly he had appeared to accept his fate. He accepted the slow fade to black as a face that mirrored his own looked down on him, awash with pity and regret. But his mind was still firing, still treading the inky waters of the darkness and cursing the names of so many that had left him to this. To this sad, sad fate. Created him with this slow fade being his only and inevitable ending. He was made to be a test and never move beyond that. And it wasn’t right. It wasn’t fair. He should never have been created. It was not a sentiment born of callousness, but to create a being and give them a will only to have them lead a very short life full of fear, manipulation, and pain? To be purely subject to the selfish whims of those unable to feel so much of what they inflicted? It was incredibly cruel. The only semblance of mercy given to him was the fact that by forcing Namine to alter his mind, she gave him something to aim for. Rather than the barest necessities to give his body way to function, she given him a life built around him. One full of falsehoods, yes, but with so many smaller bits and pieces of information that individually meant so little, but in the grand scheme of making him feel like there was more to his existence than a few days gave him another reason to strive for something again. I want to help them, too. I want to be with them I want to give her a reason to smile. Even if there was never really a first time to begin with, he felt it with all his heart. And wasn’t that enough? Wasn’t that enough to make some part of it true? He held tight to this, clung to it with every fiber of his quickly fading existence. He thought he had died. At last the pain in his chest had faded and the boy he was meant to replicate was no longer in view as he shakily shut his eyes. And still, he held on. And that same pure thought was like a rope, a chain, long and winding but unbroken... and it lead him back to that boy again. Now different. Grown. A veritable lifetime had passed in the blink of an eye for the replica. He felt that familiar distress deep in the darkness of his flickering light and found his way back to it. He knew it because it was the same fear he’d once thought he would drown in. For all he suffered and had hated, he felt pity in that moment. He couldn’t bear it to fall upon another. Not like it had with him. And so he stayed with that person. Guided and guarded him in a way no one else had and no one else knew. He doubted even the king knew in the long run. He had promises to keep. He wanted to help them. And... in an unexpected end, he kept them.
He just hadn’t expected an ending again so soon.
No, that was a lie.
He’d chosen this. He’d walked willingly hand-in-hand with his demise as if greeting an old friend. He would not be used now or then or ever again. This time, leaving was his own decision. And unlike before, there was no last minute irksome sense of regret. Not as he watched that same face now looking up at him with something that he swore was close to admiration. She’d still have a reason to smile, even if he wasn’t there to see it. This time, when he shut his eyes, they did not tremble. He was ready. Only now, strangely enough. He did not find himself alone.

The wind ruffled Xion’s hair and pulled at the ends of her coat tails. She leaned against the white brick fade of the Radiant Garden’s castle. Her eyes cast down, tracing the line of her boot toes and arms crossed over her chest. She waited, finger tapping staccato rhythms against her bicep. The evening slipped away, the streetlights flickering to life as the daylight died. As the air cooled, Xion’s own heartbeat echoed in her ears.
Tendons flexed, blood flowed, and in three years she’d grown three inches. There was a longer list: hair, eyes, digestive organs, a nose, bones, nails. The ability to read unlocked a world of once closed-off knowledge. Including the notes of her own design, procured by some clever investigative work. Magic and memory weaved to human form, an empty vessel unto which a heart or data can be impressed. The original replica program produced one surviving product: her. But if one glanced between the original schematics and Xion, they’d find few points of similarity.
Footsteps down the path drew her attention up. Xion pushed off the wall and made intentional eye contact to draw his attention. She had conspired and planned this, putting herself on Even’s path. Even was the somebody of Vexen, so Aeleus and the other had told her, and if her experience with the completed nobodies meant anything: Even and Vexen were not the same person. And it wasn’t as if she had known Vexen.
“Can we talk?”

@vexenchillingworth has entered the lab.
Ƹ̵̡ ⁑ ☕ ⁑ Ʒ While Sebastian hadn’t the slightest idea where he was, definitely not his own lab, at the moment he could hardly care less. The lab notes he’d come across bore a striking resemblance to his own research, and anything that could help give him a leg up on his project proposal was welcome at this point.
[Good to see another Ice Dad on the scene. Nice to meet you!]
but if you’re me && i’m me then who’s flying the plane ??
[Platonic starter, from Even, if you're accepting them! ;D] "That's it, I'm brushing your hair."
Myde blinked a bit the blind mage was busy working on potions having to be careful. But he’d kind of just rolled out of bed to do it so his hair was a mess and he hadn’t even realized. “Mmm...sure Ev’ if you want to. I forgot to braid it this morning. I knew we needed these done.”
