This weekend’s release of the 2017 edition of Bellwoods Motley Cru felt like a good excuse to pull a couple of the older versions out of the cellar, which made for a very enjoyable Sunday evening. This year’s beer doesn’t seem to be meant for aging, but with crisp & bright notes of passionfruit, green grape & key lime, it’s a solid refresher out of the gate. The ‘16 is a bit more muted, but with notable lychee and gooseberry character. The ‘15 is the most complex of the bunch, with notes of dark cherry, leather, persimmon, cranberry, and a hint of balsamic. Erinnert Ihr Euch noch an Smaug? (Oder habt ihr sogar noch Eines?) Dieses Rauchbier wurde Ende 2018 von uns releast und harrte seither bei uns im Kühlschrank aus. Die Kohlensäure blieb stabil, die schwachen Hefefruchtaromen sind positiverweise komplett verschwunden und geben dem Raucharoma mehr Platz. Meiner Meinung nach aktuell auf dem Höhepunkt des Geschmackes und deutlich besser und ausgewogener wie frisch. Immer spannend zu verfolgen wie sich Bier, welches mit Flaschengärung hergestellt wurde, verändert. This was one of those evenings that were easy to imagine, but who’d a thought it would actually happen... Ten years ago, back in 2010, after reading Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck’s description of their newly released Cuvée du Chateau 2010 - a beer made to taste somewhat like a 10 year old beer, I just had to put a bottle in the cellar and see how it tasted when actually vintage 10 years old... delicious. Yum. Better than what I remember from 10 years back. Rich dark fruity vinous anise infused alcohol Porto with roasted caramel malts, some chocolate, spice and more.
