"Almost as soon as humans captured the sounds of their instruments in the form of electrons, they looked for ways to control and manipulate them. With the invention of smaller, more efficient variable resistance units (commonly known as “pots” or potentiometers) in the late 1920s, volume controls were installed in housings that could be fitted with a foot pedal. With the pressing of a toe, cresting accents could be added while hands were free to play."
