Merlin wonders whether he should return to Camelot.

The question eats at him as he waits for the boat to disappear into the mist. As he waits for twilight. For dawn. For dusk.

He wonders if he ought to. Arthur’s kingdom.

It was meant to be theirs.

There are people he loves there.

They’ll ask him what happened. Gaius will want to know what Kilgarrah told him. Gwen will want to know what Arthur said in his last moments.

What is Camelot without Arthur? Without both of them?

He used to care. He fought for Camelot’s people. Who was the last person he helped, truly helped, besides Arthur? Was it Daegal? Another boy to die in Merlin’s arms.

Arthur always meant Camelot. But these past five years, Camelot has come to mean Arthur. Not Gwen, or Gaius. Not Gwaine. Just Arthur.

Camelot is still standing, thanks to Arthur.

He thought, by keeping Camelot safe, he was keeping Arthur safe. He thought that Camelot’s life was Arthur’s. But now Camelot lives, and Arthur doesn’t, and Merlin doesn’t want this kingdom anymore. He doesn’t want to sit and wait as destiny picks off more, one by one; as he fails to save them. As he seals their fates.

He wonders if they’ll forgive him, for not letting them be enough.

He turns, raises his hands, and starts to build.
