The true genius of Watanare is that one of the core writing challenges of the harem genre is that the premise requires some kind of arbitrary barrier to any actual relationships forming lest the plot completely fall apart. If the crux of your series is that a relatively ordinary, unremarkable protagonist is surrounded by beautiful women who all have the hots for them, there needs to be a pretty damn good reason why the protag can't just pick one and call it a day. Watanare answers this question by making the protagonist a 15 year old lesbian so deep in the closet that she can't properly appreciate her status as the world's luckiest baby dyke.
