a little venting under the cut re: preferences
ngl it sort of like. grinds my gears just a teensy bit when i see certain characters just like... dismissed, whump-wise? like, i get it, there are always fandom faves when it comes to whump and everyone is absolutely entitled to their opinions. i’m not saying everyone has to whump characters who aren’t their faves, but like.
if you see whump of a character who isn’t your fave, or someone mentions whump of a character who isn’t your fave, is it... too much to ask to not be openly dismissive of it? saying like “oh, i don’t care about that character getting whumped” or “oh i guess whump of that character is only acceptable in certain circumstances” or “i only give a shit about that character getting whumped if it’s only an extension of/ excuse for my fave also getting whumped” idk it just. seems a bit rude and dismissive of ppl who actually do just like whumping that character in their own right.
like, it’s absolutely okay to have preferences. everyone does. lord knows i do. and it’s okay to only consume/only want to consume whump for one particular character. there are other fandoms (not yoi, bc i love all yoi whump even tho i’m usually biased towards one particular character there) where i can’t stand the most fandom-popular whumpee. like, it genuinely annoys me to see so much whump of them. it’s nothing against the character, it’s just my personal preference.
BUT. you will never, EVER see me openly complaining about how much whump that character gets, or how that character should ONLY be whumped in conjecture with my personal fave, because i wouldn’t want fans of that character to see it and feel bad. like, it’s just common courtesy to not bash/be dismissive of something that someone else likes.
and it’d just be, y’know, nice to see this courtesy extended everywhere.
again, this is not to say you’re not allowed preferences or have to consume content that includes whump of a non-preferred character. you do you and consume what you want, that’s entirely up to you. but if you don’t like a character getting whumped, maybe consider not just loudly and publicly declaring it, just bc it’s a polite thing to do.
i know this is a super minor thing to be upset about, and honestly, it’s not even upset so much as minor annoyance, but it’s something i’ve been seeing a lot recently and this community is so amazingly wonderful and supportive on the whole i just. needed to get it off my chest.
tl;dr - “i personally prefer whump of (insert character here)” = great. “oh i don’t give a fuck about whump of (insert character here)” = kindasorta rude just a lil bit. preferences = great!. dismissal = not great.
Ahhh I keep going back to the Pottermore page to click refresh even though I know it won't do anything...
