Wheel of Time, S2E8 What Was Meant to Be
Tumblr Weave Weeks
We at The 13th Depository are delighted to announce our very first event forTumblr fans of The Wheel of Time! 🐍
Join us for a two week long celebration of the books and show that we all love that we’re calling Weave Weeks. Running from Monday, August 4th, to Sunday, August 17th, we’re offering you two weeks of prompts to follow as your heart desires (see the calendar below). We’ll be alternating between two different types of prompts:
Social Media Prompts: in case you feel you don’t have a creative bone in your body or you don’t feel like sharing your artistic work, but you still want to be a part of the event, well, we made Social Media prompts for you to share what you love so much about this story, its characters, its themes, its locations, its worldbuilding, and so much more!
Creative Prompts: these are the prompts which we’re hoping will inspire you to create lots of lovely fanworks that we cannot wait to see! All types of fanworks are welcome, all characters and ships.
We hope you’ll join us during those two weeks, be it for a few prompts here and there, or to try posting something every day!
For my missing scene, I would have loved to see the fishing scene with Moiraine and Perrin. It’s a much needed moment of levity between these two often very somber characters, and with the truncation of TDR as a book into the show most of the Perrin and Moiraine relationship development disappeared. It’s also a really fun hint into Moiraine’s humanity, as at the point where it happens in the book she is still a mysterious and enigmatic character, although there was more of her backstory in the show. There probably wasn’t a great place to put it, I don’t think it would really have made sense to add in at any point that currently exists, but still, that’s one scene I would have loved to see on screen.
Wait I just realized WoT Music Monday is a perfect opportunity to share my badly made contribution that I actually made immediately after watching the battle for The Two Rivers, and that I never shared to spare you all.
My brain as soon as Perrin started singing:
Honestly I have watched WoT 7 times now and I feel like I have to watch it 7 times more before I'll have anything smart to say about Lorne Balfe's soundtrack so I'll just list some of my fave musical moments from the show:
- the 'channelling theme' (I haven't listened to the individial tracks in a few weeks I don't know what it's called) that has significant moments in season 1, to wit: Moiraine channelling in ep 1, and Nynaeve absolutely balls to the walls channelling to heal Lan all the people in the cave in ep 4. This musical moment has the audience reacting like Logain in the scene and it is glorious. I also love how this theme is very much linked to the White Tower/Tar Valon (and echoes that theme) but is used for people who are not Aes Sedai (yet).
- I'm an absolute goner for the 'Bonded' theme (I know this one! It's called 'Wab'shar'). 😍 We're first introduced to it when Nynaeve meets the warders and it has poignant uses to reinforce how deep the bond between Kerene and Stepin is. Afterwards it's used way less but it has its shining moments in the deason 2 finale when Moiraine bonds Lan again (probably my favourite scene in the show, I love the colours of the sea and the sand coming together, creating a calm atmosphere for Mo and Lan to bond again AAAHHGH), and also in the season 3 finale when it plays over Mo and Rands conversation where he's thanking her for being the only one who's never left him.
- Egwene's theme. I remember starting ep 1 of the show for the first time, not knowing at all what I was watching except it was fantasy, there was magic and 4 kids from a village being forced to leave home. The first shot of Egwene I thought 'oh no here's some goody two shoes 🙄'. Eh, yeah. 🤷🏻♀️ I guess joke's on me, she's my ride or die. The theme that's introduced for her in season 2 (first heard when she's carrying the bucket while on cleaning duty) is so full of life and love. And then later it goes through so much iterations and it plays for example when Rand comes back from Rhuidean in the last second of ep 4 season 3. A+++ storytelling
This is my contribution to #weaveweek run by @the13thdepository . Theme is Music Monday.
Weaveweek: missing scene(s)
Right away, there were two potential scenes that came to mind when I thought of this prompt, because there were two sets of pairs that I felt like didn't get properly 'closed out' at the end of s3 and that I wish had gotten one scene each during 3x08.
The first is Rand & Aviendha.
We get a light but solid thoroughline for a lot of the season with them... and then no one-on-one interaction in 3x08. Especially since we had the 'open wound' of Alsera's death. Given that the show has generally leapt forwards in time between seasons, even if we'd gotten s4, we probably wouldn't have gotten that follow-up scene about Alsera between Rand & Aviendha, because the right time for it would have passed. Which is a shame, because the development of Rand and Aviendha's relationship was really good during the rest of the season -- we had the antagonism in 3x01 that Elayne helps quell, we had more antagonism and then some connection in 3x04, and then we had Aviendha being (reluctantly) impressed with how Rand behaves with Alsera. But we never really got a final endcap on that relationship growth -- Aviendha is just one of many Aiel who bow to him in the finale.
The other pair of characters who I felt didn't get a proper closure were Mat & Nynaeve.
We start out s3 with her promising to help him, and she follows through in the immediate episodes, but then Mat's storyline shifts to pair him up with Min, and we lose the thread of Nynaeve helping Mat. I think if we'd gotten to have Nynaeve (now unblocked) healing Mat at the end of s3, we could have closed out that thread too (or, if Mat ~mysteriously~ cannot be healed with the One Power, have her helping him in a Wisdom-healer way). I'm guessing this kind of scene also didn't make it in because they wanted to end Nynaeve on the 'high' of freeing her powers and not bring her back down to earth again but, yeah, their particular friendship felt very under-served by the finale.
I will try to write out actual missing scenes for each of these but haven't had a chance yet. Fingers crossed!
