At the actual party, I didn't understand anything as usual, but I got to talk to quite a few of the teachers who are leaving so I could say goodbye. There was also some hilarious and confusing like enkai chant/dancing that happened at the end. The best one was when this dude took off his clothes to reveal a black full body suit which he proceeded to do a dance/chant in, and just when we thought he was finished, he removed that to reveal a rainbow suit... it was surreal... and it was hard to get a read on what everyone else thought about it.
Nijikai was weird... it was like being in grade school all over again, having to pick a seat at lunch. I had really gotten used to picking a number and sitting at an assigned table, but this time had me nervous. I ended up moving around every now and then to talk to different people, so it was alright.
Unfortunately I think I revealed that I know a bit more Japanese than I had been letting on... my strategy so far has been to not show my hand, mainly because people assume that if you understand a simple phrase that you can suddenly fluently converse with them... that of course did not stop my coworkers from talking about me in front of me...
One of my JTEs is leaving and I guess you could say she's also like my handler since she made my weekly schedules and kept up with other little things for me, and so three of my other JTEs definitely just started chatting with each other like oh shit, who's gonna take her place?? I don't want to! cool thanks guys
and then I tried to say goodbye on a good note with the other JTE who's leaving and happens to be a pretty terrible person and things were going well until he asked me how much my salary is and I told him an amount that was less than it actually is, but he told me I make more than him... like, ok??
and then everyone conveniently forgot about me when it came time for sanjikai...
I think the best part of the night was talking to the teacher I have a bit of a crush on and getting his number/LINE ID. Unfortunately he happens to be one of the teachers that's leaving...
