the thing about foster care and adoption and state child care is that you are not going to find an adult who survived these systems who has anything but horror stories
people who frame their desire for children as more important than the context they obtain that kid in never seem to see the same videos I always do. Adopted children, almost always with added layers of being race or culture lost, grow up and talk about the confusion and pain this disconnect brought them. Sometimes its just being different but its also about digesting the way others see you with no safety net or control group.
do research into how the price of children is based on race. find out how much money the adoption agencies (they are all private) made during the violence in Ukraine (because white new borns make the most money). Find out how many children went "missing" after their families were put in camps when trump attacked Mexician people the first time (about half those children were SOLD into adoption by ppl who change their name).
I really cannot explain in enough ways how violent lilo and stich is.
really add in the layers of intersectionality when you think about how systemically disenfranchised indigenous people are. Look up how many grocery stores are lacking in reservations and impossible it is for the Murdered Missing Indigenous Woman to even get noticed or get help. (are you aware of the way the u.s. law works with reservations?) Do you remember reading about zuckerberg buying up all the native land on Hawaii (he then became a meme covered in sun screen to deflect this) so that the native people can be priced out?
Think about how funding has been rolled back on anything that supports child care and health access for mothers in tandem with the remove of protections for abortion. When the conversations around abortions and race came up people pointed out how white racist politicians are actively trying to increase the amount of white babies. Do you know how many Black women were sent to jail after the own tragic lost of their babies because it was deemed abortion afterwards, when this was allowed to happen before? Of how many Black and Native women have their ability to have children taken against their consent. If you can find a hand full of articles about any of these topics you need to really start seeing the roaches in the kitchen my friend.
There is so genuinely nothing casual about the people who made the live action lilo and stich saying that it was intentionally done to modernize native people.
I feel like this is its own topic but this is why you can't call fandoms or groups racist because it just gets in the way of addressing problems. You didn't have a problem with disney fans when Moana II came out you had a problem with racist people feeling safe to be openly hateful and weird towards anything culturally different than them. If that had been addressed as hate, or all the times racism, homophobia, or sexism are actually problems in any space no matter how "insignificant" , then these issues would not be derailed so easily.
Every single time any of the referenced above events happened the conversation was derailed to talk about how this instance wasn't significant enough to demonstratively prove the dangerous label or how the medium or fandom or show wasn't important or valuable enough to host the conversation. It like never seems to be bad enough for people to trust themselves to just call it evil and act on that.
Every label is a spectrum of existence and most assuredly sometimes criticism is pointless or entitled. Sometimes criticism has more to do with the context outside of the story itself, which everyone always acts like is an unfair expectation and its not. Disney's live action lilo and stich isn't bad because it didn't deliver on the meta audience experience that reflects is financial supports and agrees with its other stretching of the narrative, like when frozen tried to say the snow man could talk but Black people would never, ever, ever, ever, ever EVER live up on this mountain, its bad because it had no redeeming qualities and pretending like it doesn't actively and negatively impact the people it does is NOT A CONSEQUENCE FREE CHOICE.
tl;dr: You can actually be so mad about lilo and stich, you can be stupid annoying cause problems mad! Every time people with voice start getting annoying they are told they are stupid because they thing they care about isn't going to be fixed by their whining. That's actually just your sign to double down because if they could make you shut up they already would have. Take every ounce of entitlement you feel towards disney for your childhood or whatever and make it uninhabitable for the people who allowed this to happen. In the worse case scenario you make Native people feel cared about and loved and in the best case you might make the world a little safer for the people no one will listen to.
