A silent tragedy – this year, avian flu is raging terribly here especially among the cranes. Normally, white-tailed eagles don't attack cranes, but this crane is weakened by the disease (he staggers all the time and is too weak to fly). It can still defend itself, but that won't last much longer. It's a terrible sight.
The Eagle Flies Alone - Senja, Norway 2026
After our visit to the charming village island of Husøy, we stopped briefly at Trælvika to capture the rain and snow sweeping over Fjordgård. There, we spotted a white-tailed eagle circling the peaks around us. I grabbed my second camera from my open backpack and managed to capture a few shots of this majestic creature. It’s the largest bird of prey in Europe, with a wingspan that can reach up to 2.45 meters. For scale, I included a mountain peak in the frame.
White-tailed eagle By: H. Schrerupp From: The World Conservation Yearbook 1976
This might not be the best picture, but I still wanted to share it. Just 20 years ago, the White-tailed Eagle/havsörn was extinct in this area. Thanks to Projekt Havsörn, initiated in the 1970s by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, this magnificent and majestic bird can now be spotted here quite regularly. Today, during a walk, we saw two of them, and it made me so happy! Värmland, Sweden (November 24, 2024).

The stunning Red-spotted Bluethroat which it was amazing to see and hear what a beautiful bird only my second ever Bluethroat after one last year and view at Swineham Gravel Pit today 19/04/2026. On a fantastic day in Dorset I also loved seeing a White-tailed Eagle which was mobbed by a Marsh Harrier at Swineham which was spectacular to see and a gorgeous Dipper at Maiden Newton a bird we didn't think we'd see this year so I'm so pleased we did. Other highlights were Cetti's Warbler, Mediterranean Gull, Painted Lady and Peacock butterflies, Bloody-nosed beetle, honesty, red campion and greater stitchwort. An amazing wild spring weekend.
