What do you think went wrong on Willa's last mission that Raelle was so angry about? Petra deflected when asked and then they never brought it up again. I do think Willa sabotaged that mission ahead of time and was gearing up to fake her death beforehand but I'd love a deep dive on military fuck ups in the show lol.

It doesn't have to be anything complicated. Even before reading the letter, Raelle believed that Willa felt "used up". That's no different from lower stakes employee burnout from a workplace taking certain approaches to things (with the add that all of the employees there are conscripted, and that the job is inherently about risking your life against openly hostile forces).

We also see what Minerva and Petra expect from their own daughters, and how that would feel when the receiving end of that behavior is not related to them (having no sentimentality about living up to those expectations). Besides, Willa helpfully tells us exactly the situation:

We dropped into Liberia last night under the cover of a monsoon. But they knew we were coming. The Spree's militia sings some evil song at us, day and night, and now we can't get out. I pray this is not your experience when you are called. I blame our fearless leader. She has endangered us needlessly on numerous occasions, most critically this last drop. She's done this to us, her high haughtiness, General Petra Bellweather.

And finally, that the Proxy War Era is an entirely unsubtle dig at our world. Pick any Iraq or Afghanistan kerfuffle you want to compare.

That Willa faked her death in one particular battle is insignificant next to the fact that it was a part of a longer campaign/deployment, which itself was a part of a decades long trend, which would therefore make her seeming death non-suspicious.

(Also, timeline wonkiness rears its head now around the fact that Willa's faked death was way more recent than I thought. It changes the situation we saw at the beginning of the pilot, as Edwin's grief and possibly Raelle's rebellious behavior are actually fresh and not longterm parts of their life.

Even more importantly, was Petra only recently promoted to head of Military Intelligence, if only a year ago she was boots on the ground running a campaign in Liberia instead of, you know, running said department? What does it say that someone who apparently needlessly endangered her troops by dropping them into situations where the enemy knew they were coming was head of Military Intelligence? Did Petra have Intelligence about that situation that Willa didn't know about, rationalizing Petra's decision there? Was Willa's company/unit a sacrificial cover for the actual Intelligence operation?)
