William Sidney Mount (1807 – 1868) was an American genre painter. Mount spent much of his life in his hometown, Setauket, New York and the adjacent village of Stony Brook. There, from the 1820s he painted portraits, landscapes, and scenes inspired by daily life until his death in 1868 at the age of sixty. In that time he achieved fame in the U.S.A. and Europe as a painter for his chronicles of rural life in Long Island. Mount was also passionate about music and a fiddle player, a composer and collector of songs, and designed and patented several versions of his own violin which he named the "Cradle of Harmony." Many of his paintings also feature musicians and groups of people engaged in dance in rural settings.

The family is surrounded by the trappings of a typical upper-middle-class parlor, including a tapestry velvet rug, elegant window draperies, a Rococo Revival armchair, and marble-topped center table. This is the type of parlor that most middle-class Americans would have desired during the mid-nineteenth century."
