Go See Winchester
It’s a haunted house movie based on a real story. Helen Mirren is in this movie, and it’s got a dark post-Victorian/Edwardian aesthetic set in 1906.
If you need more motivation it also has Jason Clarke, who I did not know about until this film but he is LOVELY. He’s a psychologist who’s been hired by the Winchester company to evaluate the mental state of Mrs. Winchester, who is constantly adding/removing rooms from her enormous, creepy mansion.
It’s a PG-13 horror movie, which you might think means it’s not scary at all, but let me tell you, I reacted a lot more strongly to the scares in this film than I did to the scares in IT.
This movie is suspenseful and superbly creepy from start to finish without being gory, and I think that’s great. You won’t ever have to look away from the screen because “oh god, ugh, someone is prying out their own eyeball”. That kind of bullshit doesn’t happen here.
There’s really memorable and sympathetic characters. The plot points and explanations are really creative and poetic. The atmosphere is eerie!!
All the acting is spot-on, and there’s a fantastic twist near the end that is truly delightful in its creepiness.
Seriously, go see this film and we can attempt to take over the Winchester tag from the... other fandom... related to the Winchester name.
